THE CLUJ GUIDE: VIEWS FROM UP HIGH

I think we can all agree that the best way to look at a city is from up high. Whether you’re sightseeing or live there, looking at the city from above can put things into perspective. Not just the “everything looks so small from here” perspective, but the making sense of the city’s streets and landmarks, like a life-sized map. So if you’re ever in Cluj and want to check out a good view, these are my recommendations:

ST. MICHAEL’S CATHEDRAL TOWER

One of the things you can’t miss in Cluj is the Union Square. You literally can’t miss it, because it’s the city center and where everything is at. Plus it’s easily recognizable because of the Gothic cathedral standing in it, St. Michael’s. Its tower may not always open, but it’s a good idea to ask. You will climb and climb, wooden steps, pigeons and narrow rooms, and get very close to the very top of the tower. As expected, you can move around for a 360 degrees view of the whole city center. I was honestly impressed when I first went up there, and I was still kind of impressed the second time. And both times were after years of living here.

CETATUIA PARK

You know the weather is getting better when you look up towards Cetaţuia park and see people gazing back. Lots of people. It’s one of the most popular spots for walking, despite being reachable by more stairs than you want to count. You get a good view of most of the city, including the above mentioned cathedral, the Central Park, the campus or peripheral neighborhoods. Obviously, weekends are more crowded, but you’ll still be able to find a quiet spot if you walk around enough.

Also in the area are a dog park, a children’s park, a hotel, a couple of restaurants, and a gym. There’s a bunch of things you can do while you’re up there, and a bunch of places to take pictures in/of. I know I’ve been taking a lot of outfit pictures there, because it’s close to home, but also because there are so many different backgrounds in the same place. Just to prove a point, you can look at the pictures here, here and here.
