Drake – Over

My first memory of hearing this song was that the hook sounded really off. Off-beat or not sitting right or something, just off. But, as with all Drake it seems, I got used to it, and forgot about it, and relished singing the first line, ‘I know way too many people here right now that I didn’t know last year, who the fuck are y’all?’, cos it’s funny. And cos I haven’t made any new friends since like, 2008 or something. Drake and I been about that no new friends life.

Anyway, I’ll always remember this song fondly because I have great memories attached to it, specifically – singing it at Karaoke in Japan in 2010 with the bf and my two mates Che and Shirl, and everyone laughing at how terrible and robotic my flow was when I tried to rap along to the verses. Shirl still has a video on facebook of it, and it is equal parts cringe and laughter inducing.

Some other thoughts : I had to google what ‘Visine’ was so that I could understand that line, and I also learnt what the rosetta stone was thanks to that ‘I could teach you how to speak my language, rosetta stone’, line. Though he may have actually been referring to the online language software rather than the hieroglyphs? It works either way, but the Ancient Egypt/Ancient Greek stuff was cooler to learn about. Also, Rita Ora being in the video, before people know who Rita Ora was.
