Top 10: Words I Overuse

Top Ten Tuesday is just what it sounds like. Every Tuesday (or most (I’m forgetful) Tuesdays) I’ll be posting a Top 10 list. This feature is hosted by The Broke and Bookish.

This week’s theme for Top Ten Tuesday was that there was no theme! Yay because this means that we could choose out own. Way back in the day, I did a Top 5 post for words I overuse. Today, I’m back with a Top 10. Only 5 of the words will be new though since I still overuse all the words I overused all those months ago. These are in alphabetical order because I couldn’t think to do it any other way.

Absolutely

Often, I feel the need to put further emphasise on already strong words like fantastic because something cannot simply be fantastic. It has to be absolutely fantastic.

Adore

This is a recent addition to my regular vocabulary. I had realised that I didn’t have enough words to express my love for things. I adore the fact that this list has grown so long.

Amazing

I’m quite sure I’m not alone on this one although I could be wrong. I feel like amazing is just the perfect praise word in so many different situations. I can’t help but use it. This often comes hand in hand with absolutely.

Captured

Obviously I don’t use this in the context of capture and captive but I loved using captured in my reviews. Authors just always manage to capture the characters and the world so well (or poorly).

Completely

This is another word I use when I feel like something needs more emphasis (all the time). Completely is often used to magnify my agreement because I don’t just agree, I completely agree.

Hope

I guess I just believe in the power of hope. I often hope that you will read a book, will buy a book ASAP or will enjoy a particular book. I hope my hope is working.

Like

Not only do I like many things, I overuse like as a replacement for ‘um’, ‘for example’ and like in random like places of like sentences just because like I can.

Love

This was one of the few words I had before adore came along but even now, I still overuse love. Because of my abuse of the word, it has lost it’s power and thus triggered my overuse of the previously mentioned emphasise words.

Sucked

Unless I’m using sucked in the context of things being bad, I often use sucked in sentences along the lines of “this book (insert emphasis word) sucked me in.”

Totally

Well well well, what do we have here? Another emphasis word? Yes! Clearly, I feel the urge to totally emphasise everything I say. Just in case you didn’t already get the message.

Do you think there are any other words I overuse? Also which word/s do YOU overuse?
