Ask Lauren: How Do You Know If He’s The One?

I hope you’re all getting a kick out this month’s theme of Ask Me Anything August. From relationships to makeup and business, I’m trying to address as many of your questions as possible! Today I’m speaking to a question that I get asked quite often: How do you know if your significant other is the one? Everyone has a different idea of what this commitment might entail, so I can really only answer this from my personal point of view. Having been married for less than a year I don’t know that I am entirely qualified to dull out this advice…but you guys asked so here it is:

Picking a life partner isn’t like shopping for a sweater. This is serious business, people! We are talking about forever here. Committing yourself to someone for the rest of your life isn’t something that you should rush into. Sure, being engaged and planning a wedding is exciting, but once you’ve returned from your honeymoon, you still have the rest of your lives to spend together.

I believe that you can be madly in love with someone, but not necessarily be a great match. I also think that you can meet someone that checks off all the boxes and that you get along with perfectly, but you can still be lacking a certain something. Ideally, the person you end up with is someone that you are crazy about, but doesn’t make you crazy (too often). Finding that balance is the hard part. While a good partnership requires compromise, I believe that choosing your life partner shouldn’t. Don’t get me wrong! No one is without his or her flaws, and there will be some days that are harder than others. Things can get complicated and life happens. Personally, I wanted to find someone that wasn’t just there for me when things were wonderful, but someone who loved me on my worst days. Someone who challenged me to be better and was proud of me. Someone who made me happy and made me laugh. Someone who was willing to put my needs before their own and support me when I needed it. And most importantly, someone who I loved enough to do the same for in return.

If you are lucky enough to meet that someone, they are probably “The One.”

XO Lauren
