Mews of Mayfair

If Mayfair Pizza Co didn’t quite take your fancy, then why not pop straight opposite to Mews of Mayfair. Headed up by executive chef Michael Lecouteur formerly of Smiths of Smithfield & Bird of Smithfield, Mews of Mayfair serves up a modern British menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s the kind of food that is perfect for a Sunday lunch which is exactly why Danny and I headed there last Sunday.

Down Lancashire Court’s narrow lane, leads you past the outside dining areas and to the door that takes you past the bar and up the stairs to the restaurant. The restaurant couldn’t be more different from the bar, offering a cosy and warm setting for lunch. We settled into our table and were presented with a choice of menus, the main menu of the restaurant with everything you could imagine, the drinks of course and also a special Sunday menu called ‘Roast & Toast’. The menu is unique to Sundays and offers you two courses for £20 or three for £25. Then a further £15 for unlimited Bellini’s, Mimosa’s and Bloody Mary’s. I have to admit I had a bit of a hangover after our Valentine’s night so I knew which menu I was going for, hair of the dog and all that.

We started off with a couple of cocktails, a Mimosa and a Bloody Mary. Danny had his really spicy and the Mimosa was perfect, fruity and a with touch of fizz. As we decided to go straight for the main course, we also ordered a few nibbles from the main menu while we waited. These were salt & pepper popcorn and salted almonds, the perfect accompaniment to our cocktails and came in cute little cinema style snack boxes. The restaurant itself was filled up and my eyes were wandering having a look at what everyone else was eating, it all looked really damn good.

From the ‘Roast & Toast’ menu I chose the beer battered haddock and chips with peas and tartare sauce. The fish was absolutely huge and was so fresh and delicious. Whilst the chips as you would expect were chunky and fabulous. Danny ordered the roast sirloin of beef, which came with an extremely large Yorkshire pudding, roasted vegetables and potatoes. I can’t help but say I was a bit jealous!

Now this kind of food, fills you up straight away, well for me anyway. But of course dessert is always on the cards. Another Mimosa and Bloody Mary later we decided on desserts. Profiteroles, with vanilla cream and chocolate sauce and also sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. Both were extremely filling and the kind of dessert you finish with a big smile on your face.

If you are after a hearty Sunday lunch or just really good British style food during the week then Mews of Mayfair is definitely worth a visit. For more info and to book Mews of Mayfair visit www.mewsofmayfair.com.
