I Tried 10 Step Korean Skincare Routine For 10 Days

1. Oil Based Cleanser (Makeup Removal)
Oil gets drawn out by oil. Majority of the makeup and sunscreen we put on do contain oil meaning that it will dissolve with an oil based cleanser.
Cleansing oils, balms, cream or milk work amazing in effectively melting away any makeup residues.

My current favorites

Garnier Clean Sensitive 2 in 1 Makeup Remover (My holy grail!!! I use this for removing my eye makeup only)
Heimish All Clean Balm
Eve Lom Cleanser (Lisa Eldridge's go-to)

2. Water Based Cleanser
I'm sure many of you guys are now so used to that double-cleansing method. I don't know a single friend who wears makeup and skip the double-cleansing. Us Koreans are anal about skincare in general but especially in cleansing. Incorporating another water based cleanser aka foam cleansers can remove any residues or impurities. Try to go opt for the one that has low pH level so it doesn't strip your skin out.

3. Exfoliation
This is definitely my favorite step. Exfoliating is an essential step to that smooth and glowing skin. Exfoliating pads are becoming a massive trend in Korea at the moment. People are slowly started to shift from the traditional physical exfoliator that can be a little abrasive to who has sensitive skin types, and replace those by pre-soaked exfoliating cotton pads. Majority of the exfoliating pads out there contains chemical exfoliants such as AHA/BHA which chemically removes the dead skin cells. It's not only milder to use but it's also made the exfoliating process so much more easier!

4. Toner (Skin)
Toner, oh TONER. In many western countries, toner is perceived as astringents, or something alcohol based. In Korea, toner is considered a bridge in between cleansing and your actual skincare regime. It helps balancing your skin's pH levels and preps your skin to absorb the following products better.
My Current Favorite

Benton Snail Bee High Content Skin (Loving the mild ingredient list!)
Primera Organience Water

5. Essence
A lot of essences in Korea comes in a watery consistency. I think you can definitely skip toner or either essence, but I would definitely recommend using these boosting essences over any toner since they not only hydrate but also refines your skin texture. Softens your skin.

My current favorites
Primera Miracle Seed Essence (HOLY GRAILLL!!!)
Missha Time Revolution The First Treatment Essence Intensive

6. Serum / Ampoules
If I only have one skincare product to invest in, it would definitely be a serum. Serums are the highlight of your skincare regime and the most potent and concentrated treatment that actually works to treat whatever skin issues you want to target. Think other steps of skincare routine as a hydrating treatment, but with serums, you can really experiment and get the most out of it when you have specific skin concerns. If you have dry skin, invest in a hydrating serum or a facial oil! If you have problems with pores, invest in a pore minimizing serum. If you saggy skin, invest in a firming, anti aging serum. If you have dark spots, discolorations, acne scarrings, invest in a brightening serum.
My current favorites

Drunk Elephant C-Firma Day serum (for fading hyperpigmentation)
COSRX Mela 14 White Ampule (for evening out complexion)
2SOL Duna Repairing Ampoule (for calming, soothing down irritated skin & repairing) Blithe Tundra Chaga Pressed Serum (for nourishing and firming!) Primera Super Sprout Serum (for healthy, lively looking skin)
7. Eye Cream
We all know the importance of eye cream, but it's the category that we most overlook to actually apply it. But remember, the eye area is the most delicate skin on your face, meaning that it will be the first part to show AGING.
8. Moisturizer
Need I say more about hydrating and locking all the moisture in your skin? Good hydration is crucial to treating all types of skins out there. Whether you have dry skin, oily skin, acne prone skin or aged skin, HYDRATION is like a must.

My current favorites

Primera Alpine Berry Watery Cream (HOLY GRAIL. OKAY. PERIOD.)
Primera Alpine Berry Watery Cream Intensive
9. Mask
This is where you can have some fun with your skincare routine. We have so many new different types of masks coming out in Korea that it's almost so hard to keep up with. Masks are my ritual, my pampering routine, my meditation, and my soul. If I ever have irritation happening, I would slap on a soothing sheet mask and it definitely helps calming down my skin overnight. Sleeping masks is one of my favorite forms of skin treatments as well, because it really hydrates, distresses and nourishes your skin and you'll notice that the makeup goes on way smoother in the following morning.

Trying The Weirdest Korean Face Masks
Q : "WHEN DOES SHEET MASK COME IN?!!" A : I know it gets quite controversial regarding WHEN to include the mask but many Korean women and beauty editors would do the sheet mask in the last step and don't absorb the essence completely into their skin but instead sleep with it like doing a sleeping mask! :) If you're doing a sheet mask in between other steps, make sure you absorb all the essence into your skin or wipe off the essence so that other following products can penetrate too! ( ) to add here, if you're doing sheet mask then followed by a moisturizer, you're using the moisturizer as an occlusive(seal/barrier) to lock in the moisture from evaporating into the air. The order I used in the video (sheet mask as the last step) is basically using the sheet mask to work as an occlusive. Since sheet mask does include a lot of penetrating enhancer it will also help penetrate the essence/serum/moisturizer you applied beforehand which results in less water-loss. This method is good to do in dryer season. I know some skincare savvy people will even apply oil before they do the sheet mask. That way the oil you applied will draw more emollient&occlusive content from the sheet mask. So the perspective that's used here is that they are using the sheet mask as a 'tool' rather than an 'essence/serum'! Hope it answered some of your questions!!!
10. Sunscreen
Koreans grow up with sunscreen. We are educated that UV ray is the most harmful factor in aging your skin. I find it really funny whenever I go travel and visit the beach, I can spot Koreans or Asians slathering on heaps of sunscreens, with a big hat (or a visor) and never come out from the sunbrellas. Whereas everyone else is rubbing tanning oils and even getting almost naked to soak up the sunlight.
My current favorites

EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 (Dermatologist recommended) Shiseido Oil-free UV Protector
La Roche Posay Anthelois 50 Mineral

So did my skin improve over the last 10 days I've tried sticking to this extensive 10 step Korean skincare routine? The answer is yes. I noticed my skin transforming from a rough, patchy, pimpled up skin to a hydrated, firm, softer and smoother skin.
