Notable New Releases: April 2015

April brings us new anticipated fiction from Elizabeth Berg (The Dream Lover), Susanna Kearsley (A Desperate Fortune), and Maureen Gibbon (Paris Red) – not to mention Toni Morrison (God Help the Child) and Jane Smiley (Last Hundred Years), among so many others. There’s also a new addition to the Jane Austen project, in which contemporary authors have been crafting their own retellings of the classic novels; we previously saw Joanna Trollope’s take on Sense & Sensibility as well as Val McDermid’s treatment of Northanger Abbey, and now Alexander McCall Smith joins in with his take on Emma. In mystery, the terrific Jo Nesbø has a new standalone novel (Blood on Snow) and there’s new work from Jon Land (Black Scopion), Lisa Scottoline (Every Fifteen Minutes), David Baldacci (Memory Man), and Iris Johansen (Your Next Breath). In young adult there’s work from Jessi Kirby (Things We Know by Heart) and Becky Albertalli (Simon vs. Homo Sapiens Agenda); sci-fi/fantasy sees new stories from Paula Brackston (The Silver Witch) and Jennifer Ashley (Mate Bond); and romance has a slew of new titles from authors like Jill Shalvis (Still the One), Christina Lauren (Beautiful Secret), and Grace Burrowes (The Duke’s Disaster). In new adult there’s work from Krista and Becca Ritchie (Fuel the Fire), Abbi Glines (When I’m Gone), and many others. Last but not least, nonfiction sees everything from biographies (Michelle Obama by Peter Slevin) to memoirs (Picnic in Provence by Elizabeth Bard) to an examination of women in science (Headstrong by Rachel Swaby) and, in the vein of Neil Gaiman, another commencement speech-turned-book (Very Good Lives by J.K. Rowling). With so much to read this month, I’m wishing lots of well-loved books (hopefully read outside, in the sunshine, not the snow). Enjoy!

Notable New Releases is a monthly series highlighting a hand-picked selection of new books in American publishing. My goal is to provide a place for readers to get a glimpse at some of the new titles available, to keep up with their most anticipated books of the year and hopefully find a new read (or two or three) along the way. Notable New Releases is a one-woman show and publication dates are always subject to change. If there’s a book coming out in future months that you’d like to see included in the series, recommendations are always welcome!
