Not All Black Girls Have The Same Hair

There’s a reason there are so many YouTubers and bloggers giving hair inspiration for women of color. Because our hair is not all the same! The jist of it is, most of us have curly/kinky hair but the actual texture can vary immensely.

People always ask me how I can straighten my hair all the time and keep it natural without damaging it (meaning no chemicals in it to straighten it) And honestly I can’t answer that. There are some mixes in my family, my parents are from Haiti but we have Dominican ancestry. And my mothers hair is ridiculously curly. She looks like she has a jerry curl (she doesn’t lol) My hair still curls when I want it to, I just prefer it straight with the kind of hair cut I have at the moment.

Basically what I’m trying to do is sum up the point that everyone’s background is different, people mixed along the way or didn’t and our hair is a symbol of that. With that, I feel like we need to get to know our OWN hair and stop comparing it to others. The same styles or things I’m able to do you may not. I straighten my hair very easily it doesn’t take me long at all but when I did my aunts hair one time which is a different texture, I learned that is not the case for everyone. And also that heat can be extremely damaging to one texture and not as much to another.

So this movement of not putting straightening chemicals in our hair is great, I absolutely love it and hope it continues. (Don’t get me wrong, if a relaxer is your thing to each her own, I don’t knock it, and trust me I get it) But the next step is learning our hair and what looks good on us and what our hair personally can withstand. It’s great to get inspiration from others but make it your own, to fit your features, style, and texture.

Being like someone else is boring anyway xx
