Tips For Creating An Eco-Friendly Nursery

Decorating the nursery is a very exciting project for expectant parents and if you’re committed to a greener lifestyle, it’s only natural to want to carry on this approach when creating a nurturing environment for your new bundle of joy. A newborn’s immune system is fragile so it’s in their best interest to minimise harmful chemicals and allergens around the home. Purchasing natural products is a great way to create a clean, healthy living space whilst benefiting the environment too.

Here are our tips for creating an eco-friendly nursery:

1. Use paint that comes from managed sources and is free of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s). Using VOC-free paint will reduce the number of harmful toxins circulating through the air and any lingering fumes will be gone by the time your baby arrives.

2. Consider purchasing furniture made from sustainable materials like recycled wood or certified natural wood and ensure that any finishes are water-based.

3. Choose natural flooring such as cork, bamboo, natural linoleum, carpet and wood. These materials are not only durable and free of harmful substances but manufactured in an environmentally friendly manner. Consider using natural wool carpet with a cushioned carpet underlay or wood flooring that has been reclaimed.

4. Purchase bedding that is made using natural dyes and organic fabrics like cotton or wool as these will protect your baby from allergens and harmful toxins that could otherwise irritate their delicate skin.

5. Newborns’ will spend the majority of their time sleeping so invest in an organic cotton mattress to reduce the risk of exposure to toxins in the materials. Organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides or fertilizers so it’s the best option for a safer and healthier night’s sleep.

6. When it comes to lighting, shop around as there are lots of lamps available that are made from organic and natural materials. It’s also wise to use low energy bulbs, LED lighting and dimmer switches to conserve energy.

7. Control the natural lighting in the room with blinds and keep your baby protected from strong sunlight at the same time. Blackout blinds are extremely useful for darkening the room for nap time and the company VELUX offers blackout blinds which are also energy efficient thanks to an aluminium backing that prevents heat loss.

8. Opt for wooden toys or ones that are made from recycled and organic materials as they are better for the environment and will prevent your baby from being exposed to harmful chemicals.

9. Clean your baby’s nursery with eco-friendly products that are free from harsh chemicals and always make sure to read the labels carefully before use.

10. Create the purest of environments for your baby and prevent long-term health problems by using an air purifier to remove air pollutants like dust, pollen, pet dander, viruses and germs. It will go a long way to protecting your baby and can also help alleviate symptoms of allergies.
