Editor’s Inspiration: an owl crochet pattern

LoveCrochet |

This week, owls are the name of the game. This owl crochet pattern by Megan Barclay is simple and fun.

This is a tawny owl. Medium sized and common in forested areas in Europe and Asia, some people might think this owl is nothing special. I beg to differ – their hollow hoots have long been associated with bad luck in mythology. I don’t think these guys deserve the bad reputation; I think owls of all kinds are cool, and they share my nocturnal habits.

About two weeks ago, a tawny owl moved in outside my apartment. Late at night, you can hear it hooting, and it’s seriously cool. Last night, I heard a second tawny owl hooting, and I can’t help but wonder if baby owlets are in store! Here’s what tawny owls sound like:

I love owls. I think they are magnificent creatures – they represent wisdom, but are fierce predators that can silently swoop in. If I had a patronus (like in Harry Potter), it would definitely be an owl. To commemorate my owl-obsession, I’m going to make this adorable owl crochet pattern by Megan Barclay.

This huggable owl is crocheted with worsted weight yarn, and uses simple crochet techniques to build it. The designer recommends Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in White, Taupe, and Silver Grey, as seen here:

You will also need a yarn needle, safety eyes, and polyfill stuffing to finish your owl. The pattern includes a photo tutorial to help you along your owly journey, and to help beginners understand different crochet techniques. This owl uses the magic ring to start, standard crochet stitches, and working through the front and back loops. You’ll also need to be able to sew the pieces together at the end.

When completed, this owl stands about nine inches tall – a perfect size for hugging and snuggling. I might make two to match the tawny owl pair that have taken up living outside my apartment, and use them as pillows. After all, what’s more cuddly than an owl?
