Munchkin Milestone // We Like Bathtime

I’m not gonna lie — our first couple of cracks at giving Henry a bath were laughable. He was screaming, we were frantically trying to clean him, and it was like trying to wrangle a squirmy, slippery little animal. An animal who was none too happy to be naked and wet. Looking back, we were totally clueless about what we needed and what would make bathtime easier for us and enjoyable (or at least not terrifying) for the little dude. I’m happy to report, though, that we got smart and figured a few things out. And we have reached the milestone where Henry actually likes taking a bath. It took a few tries, but we got there and now I actually love it too. I mean, what’s cuter than a baby in a tub?!

We realized that the actual baby tub makes all the difference in the world. We started using this little tub from Munchkin, and he fits perfectly in there. It also has a little reservoir on the bottom where water can collect to keep him warm but it won’t overflow. Brilliant. (Side note: How about that mint green tile, huh? That’s what you get for living in a house from the 1950’s.)

The first few times we were also scrambling around with washcloths and soap and there was nowhere to set anything. Now we have a little bath caddy where we keep soap, extra cloths, his little hair shampoo-er thingy, and a few little odds and ends. It’s so much easier to have everything there at the ready.

Another necessity? A cushy kneeler. Oh my gosh. The first few baths were spent awkwardly bent over or kneeling on wadded up towels. The kneeler makes it easier to stay down there for a while so you don’t have to rush through bathtime because your knees are gonna break.

We also eventually realized that Henry didn’t like bathtime because it was kinda cold. You can’t really submerge a little one in water, so now we put a warm washcloth over his tummy and pour warm water over it with a rinser to keep him toasty. (No, that washcloth was not placed there for modesty purposes. Although that was a bonus.) That little discovery was I think the key to get him to calm down enough to enjoy a little tub time. Side note — a rinser is also perfect for washing baby hair without having to hang the kid upside down. This one is nice and soft, too, just in case you bonk baby in the head… Not saying I’ve done that or anything.

All in all, we’re feeling pretty pumped that bathtime doesn’t involve a screaming baby any more. And now that we’re trying to get some bedtime routines happening, the bath is a crucial part of it. If you have little ones and have any other brilliant bathtime tips, I’m all ears! xoxo
