Braids for Long Hair

Right now I have really, really long hair. It’s getting a little too long for my liking. I might cut it soon, so I wanted to make sure that I shared some different braids for long hair ideas before I chop it. And by chop it, I just mean reasonably trimmed. I don’t think I’m ready for a super short haircut yet! Although, I’ve been thinking about it… Maybe summer?

Braids for Long Hair

It’s hard to cater to everyone here in this world of blogging and I know there are a lot of you short haired gals out there. Sorry! You could pin it for later in case you ever grow your hair out! In the meantime, you can check out these cute hairstyles for short hair. Then forward this to your long-haired friends! I’m sure they’ll appreciate it!

Regular three-strand braid

Let’s start simple, right? Pull all your hair to one side and just create a long, three-strand braid. It’s easy, it’s cute and it contains your hair. This one is for every long-haired gal to have in their hair bag of tricks, it’ll come in handy!

Simple French Braid

A regular French braid is also a very easy braid for long hair. Oh and did you know that this “French” braid in France is just a regular braid? Try explaining a French braid to a French person, that’s when I figured it out! Anyway, just braid all your hair over to one side and down including all the hair from the other side in the French braid. Here is a French braid tutorial here if you’d like to see it done.

Topsy Turvy ‘Braid’

If you can’t braid, no problem! You’ve got to try this one. You can see the picture tutorial here and it’s included in this video tutorial here, but basically you pull an 80’s move and topsy turvy a regular ponytail all the way down securing with small elastics the whole way. Super easy and super cute with no extra skills needed!

Fishtail Braid

If you’ve never tried a fishtail braid, you’ve got tot try it. All you do is separate your hair into two sections and take a piece from one section and cross it over to the other, then repeat on the other side. Then continue doing so until you’re all the way at the end! Super simple, right?!

Dutch Braid

Gotta love a good Dutch braid! I wonder what they’re called in The Netherlands? And why do we call them these names, anyone know? Either way, this is just a regular braid but pulling the pieces under not over. Here is a video tutorial if you’d like to see how it’s done. Dutch braids can create so many different, gorgeous hairstyles!

Double French Braid

This braid for long hair is actually super simple. French braid the front of your hair back to just behind the ear and then continue braiding all the way down. Secure with a small elastic or just a bobby pin if you don’t want to hold it. Start a little off to the side with your other braid and French braid until you’ve reached where your front French braid stopped. Combine them by adding the front braid to the back braid as a section and braid all the way down.

4-strand braid

This one looks complicated, but it’s really not, promise! There is a picture tutorial here, but let me explain a little bit. Start with all your hair to one side and separate into 4 sections. Then you’re going to do somewhat of a basket weave. With the farthest most strand, go over, under, over until it becomes the inner most strand. Return to the (new) farthest most strand and repeat. Do this until you’ve hit the bottom! Voila, you’ve got quite the intricate braid!

Milk Maid Braids

If you have long hair, you have to try this style. It gets your hair off your neck and is cute! Perfect look for summer. You just create two regular braids down the back and secure with a small (preferably unnoticeable) elastic. Take one braid and pull it up to your crown and secure with bobby pins. Repeat on the other side doing your best to cover elastics and bobby pins. Milk maid braids are easy!

There you have it, 8 different braids for long hair. Anything else you would add? I know there are a lot of different combinations of all these, but these are basic braids for long hair that anyone can do. Hope you enjoy!
