Sew a Carrot Treat Bag for Easter! (Make It and Love It)

Hello Make it & Love it readers…Crystal here, from Stitched by Crystal! Spring is right around the corner so now is a great time to hop into some spring sewing. And not just any spring sewing…Easter sewing! A few years back, I made some really cute bunny shaped candy bags for my kids Easter baskets. Those bags have been used over and over, so this year I am adding some new little treat bags and what pairs better with bunnies than carrots?! Today I am sharing a tutorial to make a Carrot Treat Bag, a perfect addition to your little one’s Easter basket!

These little carrot treat bags hold lots of goodies. They make a really fun alternative to those little plastic eggs! And they will last, so you can fill them year after year!

These bags are small, making them a great project to use up some fabric scraps. But they are still big enough to hold plenty of treats! And they sew up quick, too, so you can make a few or make a whole bushel!

The drawstring top keeps all the goodies safely inside, while still being really easy for little fingers to open.

To make these carrot treat bags, you will need…

Green and orange fabrics, 1/4 yard of some fat quarters will be more than you need!
1 yard of ribbon or string for each bag
basic sewing supplies

Start by cutting two green squares that are 6″ x 6″ and two orange rectangles that are 7″ tall and 6″ wide.

To make the carrot shape, fold your orange rectangles in half, matching the 7″ sides. Measure down 1″ from the top and cut a diagonal line from the bottom folded edge to the 1″ mark.

Place your orange carrot pieces and your green squares right sides together and sew with a 3/8″ seam allowance. Finish the seam with a serger or zig zag stitch on your sewing machine. Press the seam allowance down towards the carrot and topstitch.

Finish the raw edges of each carrot half with a serger or zig zag stitch on your sewing machine.

Place the carrot halves right sides together and sew the sides with a 3/8″ seam allowance, leaving the top open. Press the seams open on the green top.

Fold the green fabric down towards the wrong side so the finished edge of the green is about 1/4″-1/2″ above the seam of the carrot sides.

Next, you will create a channel for the draw string. Sew all the way around the carrot at the bottom of the finished edge of the green fabric. Then sew a second line all the way around about 1/2″ above your first line. I find these are easiest to sew if I turn the carrot right side out and work with my sewing machine foot inside the carrot.

Using a seam ripper, carefully open the stitches at the side seam in between the casing lines you just made.

Finally, add your draw string. Cut two lengths of ribbon 16″ long. Place a safety pin on the end of one ribbon and push it through the casing, when it comes out the opposite side, push it through the casing on the other side of the carrot. Remove the safety pin and then tie the two ends of the ribbon together. Repeat with the second ribbon starting on the opposite side of the carrot.
