Review & Swatches: Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipsticks

Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipsticks
Just like felt-tipped lip stains, chunky lip pencils, and lip butters, liquid lipsticks are having a major moment in makeup right now. It's hard to keep up with so many hitting shelves at once, but one brand that's commanding the spotlight is Anastasia Beverly Hills. Their liquid lipsticks are everywhere (particularly my Instagram feed), and I couldn't hold out anymore! I had to put them to the test...

Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipsticks ($20) promise intense pigmentation, a matte finish, full coverage in just one swipe, and all-day wear. I bought 5 shades - all of which (unintentionally) fall into the warm, bold color category:

  • Milk Shake: Pale, milky nude
  • Retro Coral: Bright pink coral
  • Neon Coral: Bright sherbet orange
  • Spicy: Red orange
  • Vamp: Deep brown red
I didn't realize I ordered so many warm shades - some of these looked a little cooler and berry-toned on the site. Still, the variety of light and dark shades were enough to get a good look at the formula, and how it might vary from shade to shade.
First off, let's talk opacity. Anastasia says one layer will do the trick, but lighter shades like Milk Shake, Retro Coral, and Neon Coral came off as streaky with less than two layers (two layers are shown in the lip pics below). Spicy and Vamp, on the other hand, cover completely with just one swipe.
All of these have a thinner cream texture that takes about 30 second to completely dry. Blot any sooner, and some of the lighter shades will show streaks. The drying time is nice for those that want some time to work with shades and mix them together, but can be a pain for anyone using one of the lighter shades and want to avoid streaks.
The lasting power is where these really shine. Not only do all of these apply true to the shade in the tube, but the colors look the same at hour 1 as they do at hour 5. For real. No flaking, smudging, or fading - even through eating and drinking!
The only thing you really need to be careful of with these is the state of your lips during application. To be honest, I didn't think these were going to be my cup of tea when I first tried these. My lips were dry, lined, flaking, and these definitely didn't do them any favors. Make sure your lips are exfoliated and hydrated to get the smoothest application, and longest lasting power. While they don't nourish the lips, they also do dehydrate them further - which can't be said about all liquid lipsticks!
Overall, provided you're okay with the drying time and layering up to avoid streakiness in the lighter shades, these are worth checking out! $20 is a worthwhile investment when you love the color, and can avoid reapplying throughout the day.
