Non-traditional valentines~

Hello Daisies. It's me, Jody, sharing a couple of non-traditional Valentine's Day cards with you today. With the holiday fast approaching you still have plenty of time to create something special for a loved one or friend using some simple techniques and products.

I love making cards on days like this because you can add little touches that are unique and you don't have to get stuck with using the traditional colors of Valentine's Day, which are typically red, pink, black and white. I made a couple of different cards- both a masculine and a more feminine card- to show you that there is a lot of room to play with your scraps without using all hearts. Hopefully this will inspire you to look at the items you have or push you to get something a little different to show your love to someone this coming weekend.

My husband doesn't even wear glasses, nor does he have a mustache, but I am sure he will still appreciate a thoughtful card and the fun way this message is shown to him for Valentine's Day this year. Adding a piece of chocolate or an iTunes card to the inside of something like this sends an extra special touch too!

Some of the Maya Road embellishments used in this card are chipboard alphas and arrows, nerd glasses, mustache charm and lightbulb clip. A bit of washi tape and stamps finish the card off nicely and keep it simple without getting mushy at all. =)

The other card I made is one that doesn't necessarily have to be for Valentine's and yet it is sweet enough to be well-received by someone special! I meant for it to be read as "Hello dear" with the sentiment and pink deer on the front, but even if that message is missed it still works simply as a thinking of you card too. As you can see, there's only a tiny bit of red- which I think sort of packs a sweet tiny punch when it's in the form of a heart pin and polka dot wooden button.

I painted the polka dot kraft envelope flap a pale mint green with a basic acrylic paint so that there wouldn't be so much kraft color to the card. Most of the items were adhered using tiny glue dots and that's really all there is to making cards- easy doesn't have to mean boring! The mix of textures from the gold bow, to kraft black vintage typewriter and the pink deer keep it playful and fun.

I would love to receive a card like this in the mail for Valentine's Day, or anytime. Especially if there was a dark chocolate square tucked inside. =) Have fun making your own sweet surprises and happy Valentine's from me to you!
