{Review & Giveaway} Treasures Nappies for Your Little Treasure

Once you become a parent, talking about your baby’s toileting habits become a pretty regular topic of conversation; how often they’re going, what colour their ‘movements’ are, the volume and mess and of course, the dreaded ‘Number three’.

With Dora almost out of nappies, except for night time, I forgot how many nappies new babies go through. Moo’s record is four nappies in one changing session… I’d wait until I thought she was ready for a clean nappy and just as I fastened the sides, she’d let out a baby grunt and we’d have to start over.

When Moo was ten days old, we had a family photoshoot in which she was the star. We were all ready to go and it was time to de-robe her for the el-naturale look. There she was, bare skinned, cooing in front of me on the change table in the pristine white studio, when “RIIIPPPP,” a mustard coloured stream flew out of my tiny baby like a fountain. I copped the wet stuff down my front and managed to dam the other, more oozy stuff with a cloth. Holy Mother of Mess, thank goodness for fast mummy reflexes!

Here are a few tips I’ve picked up through experiencing many a messy nappy change.

How to avoid big messes with little babies (and keeping poo off the curtains):

* Always have a cloth nappy and baby wipes close at hand when changing your baby. I bought a 12 pack of cheap old-school terry toweling nappies that come in very handy as nappy change mats. I always have one packed in my nappy bag.

* Before opening a soiled nappy, place the clean one under your baby’s bum so that it’s there to soak up any spillages that may happen mid-nappy change.

* Choose good quality nappies with elasticised leak guards and wide side flaps. Run your fingers along the elastic guards to make sure they are sitting up ready to capture any potential leakages.

* When fastening each side of the nappy, make sure you push the side flaps around your baby’s back as far as you can.

* Ensure the nappy is on tightly and up high enough at the back (no plumbers bum showing). I make sure it’s not too tight by running my fingers under the waist-band once fastened.

* Always pack spare clothes for your baby and yourself just in case a number three catches you off guard.

I kept the above list in mind when I was kindly offered to trial a new (to Australia) brand of disposable nappies. Treasures are new to IGA stores and offer high quality, affordable nappies that are kind to little bottoms. Moo has been wearing these day and night for over a week. To start with, they look super cute with their Hairy Maclary characters printed on them. They are made from a really soft material which is really gentle on new skin. The waistband is high and soft, which makes it easy to fold down when your new baby’s umbilical stump is still attached.

I was particularly impressed with the side flaps which seem to reach further around my baby than other nappies I’ve used before. These flaps, as well as the elastic guards on the inner part of the nappy insure leaks are kept to a minimum. We have actually only had one leak and it was due to me not doing them up tightly enough around the legs.

Moo sleeps 6-7 hours straight without a nappy change now – yippee! Treasures are absorbent enough to go the distance over night which always makes for happy parent.
