This and That

Today I toast the old, the antique. The items that were continuously considered precious or just interesting enough to keep, and thus surpassed generations.

-The first I found in my parent's storage unit. I assume it was once my grandparents' but beyond that I know nothing. I do know it has the sweetest drawing and a wonderful frame. The glass is slightly ill-fitted and it wiggles when moved, but the hand carved wood is sturdy and a model of supreme craftsmanship. My favorite detail is the old hook on the backside, a spun wire stretched to limits. I can only imagine the walls it once inhabited.

-When asked, "If you had to take one item if your house was on fire what would it be?" My answer is always, this crucifix. Although I am confident it could survive that sort of unfortunate event. This, my friends, is my most prized possession. It was my great-great grandfather's (Pepé Michélon) who carried it with him all through WWI. He fought in the trenches at the Battle of Verdun and with this cross, he survived. I don't know how versed you are on your 20th c. European History but Verdun was one of the bloodiest battles of WWI with somewhere between 700,000-1,000,000 casualties. After the War Pepé Michélon eventually gave the crucifix to my grandmother, and she to me. It is my good luck charm.

So now my turn to ask the question, "If you had to take one item if your house was on fire what would it be?"
