SHE WORE WHAT?! You’re Out of Order, Soldier.

I have driven on bits of Route 66. I even visited the Blue Whale of Catoosa while working in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but I have yet to do a proper road trip along the historic highway. Someday.

That does not stop me from sporting this Route 66 print skirt. It is an easy-going, quirky and comfortable little skirt. It would be perfectly suited for care-free summer days, I am sure, but I always seem to wear it in the winter.

That never struck me as odd until now. Route 66, a summer vacation destination… lightweight, white cotton skirt, a summer staple… that I choose to wear in the winter. Huh.

I gave up trying to figure out the way my mind works a long time ago. Now I just go with it.

Sometimes not following the natural order of things can lead to something better. Something so perfect that it feels natural and makes you wonder why you never thought of it all along? Like wearing a white summer skirt in the middle of winter.

Clothes need not be bound by the season they were intended for. With the right styling, they can work year-round.

I previously styled this skirt for winter by pairing it with knit leg warmers and a faux-fur scarf. Here, a quilted sweatshirt and wide belt help add the weight it needs to look winter appropriate. A wool beret lends a bit of warmth and an oversized studded handbag pulls all of the details together. Little wedges made navigating icy sidewalks manageable while out meeting with magazine editors for an upcoming feature and sofa shopping for that feature. More about that later. It is pretty exciting!

I picked up these two men in my travels. I normally do not bring strange men home with me, but I have a soft spot for soldiers.
