style journal // ion hotel.

The ION Hotel has topped every travel list I found while looking up where to stay in Iceland. Located about an hour east of Reykjavik in Selfoss, its a nice drive through the countryside and into the mountains and worth the trip (just avoid taking the summer road any time during the winter – my full experience here on TripAdvisor). It was originally an abandoned inn that architect Tryggvi Thorsteinsson from studio Minarc turned into what they call a ‘luxury adventure’ ‘eco-luxury’ hotel (which include environmentally safe building standards including use of green and sustainable materials, water saving shower systems, bed and chairs made from recycled materials, fairtrade organic linens, local ingredients at restaurant Silfra).

There is so much to do around ION, but I love to roam the grounds whenever I arrive at my destination. Of course there were lava fields for miles set against mountains and volcanoes.. If only it were still winter so that I could have caught the Aurora/Northern Lights. Next time!
