Help @MomsRising & Me Petition @Islands for #Healthy Children’s Menu!

Are you fed up with your kids being force fed french fries every time you go out to eat? Are you tired of the arguments at the table after you wave away the server’s pitcher of high fructose corn syrup for refills? Do you wish you could go to your favorite family restaurant and feel confident that there’s a healthy children’s menu available? Me, too! That’s why I was so excited to discover MomsRising’s new initiative empowering parents to ask local restaurants to shift to healthier options on children’s menus. Through MomsRising, I created a petition for a healthier children’s menu at the Islands chain of restaurants. What restaurant chain would you target, if you could? Oh, wait: Now you can!

Through MomsRising, I created a petition for a healthier children’s menu at the Islands chain of restaurants. What restaurant chain would you target, if you could? Oh, wait: Now you can!

Usually, we eat dinner at home. But the flagship Islands happens to be two blocks from my house. The restaurant was the location for countless birthdays and soccer celebrations. As young children, my kids were obsessed with it.

But I always dreaded the fights that came with going to Islands, as I forced them to share a plate of fries and augment with side salads and drink water rather than soda. The piece de resistance was when I asked the manager what they did with the barely used crayons left at every table. They throw them away.

So when MomsRising created this initiative, I jumped at the change. My petition is simple. I asked Islands to:

1. Offer more fruit and vegetable options and make those options the default side dishes with every children’s meal.

2. Remove soft drinks and other sugary drinks as the default choice from the children’s menu.

3. Stop servers from automatically refilling drinks without checking in, unless the drink is water.

4. Offer recycled crayons rather than throwing away a pack with each child!

I shared that:

1. American children on average eat 25% of their daily calories at restaurants.

2. Studies show that consumption of restaurant food is associated with increased calorie intake and poorer diet quality.

3. 17% of American kids aged 2 to 19 are at unhealthy weights, and diet-related children’s health issues are a growing concern.

I agree with MomsRising: We need our favorite family eateries to work with us by offering healthier choices on their kids menus. Right?

Will you sign my petition? I’d so appreciate it. Leave me a comment with the link and I’ll sign yours!
