NOW: SIKI IM SS15

So New York is finally getting its own Men’s Fashion Week with a first edition coming this July (13-16). While the timing (two weeks after Paris Men’s Fashion Week ends) and the first participants are mostly commercial, I couldn’t be happier to see designer like Siki Im taking part of it. Siki’s aesthetic is quite unique in the American landscape. Unlike many designers following the market and buyers’ requests, Siki fully embraces a whole new genre, mixing different worlds (Eastern vs Western), gender studies, silhouettes (tailored vs oversized), and traditions vs avant-garde. His SS15 collection illustrates well this complex balance with an army of young and determined warriors wrapped in tie-dyes and oversized kimonos. The asymmetrical silhouette unleashes the body and offers new volumes. The color palette, between yin and yang, zen and punk, “masculin/feminin”, plays with established rules. There is no violent transgression here but a firm desire to explore a new path.
