Must See: Iris Apfel Documentary

In the trailer for the upcoming documentary on the fashion world’s favorite “rare bird,” Iris Apfel shares a common sentiment we sure can relate to. “I didn’t give a damn about going to the party or being at the party it was getting dressed for the party and there’s truth and poetry in that,” begins Apfel. who at 93 is still the life of the party.

The queen of costume jewelry, statement accessories, the art of the find, Apfel’s unparalleled iconic style has been subject to a travelling solo exhibition organized and inaugurated at The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, an Iris-inspired Ralph Lauren textile collection, a MAC cosmetics color collection and campaign, and decades of Bill Cunningham’s Sunday New York Times street style photographs, to name a few tributes.

Late, great documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles, the man behind seminal films in the genre including “Grey Gardens” and “Gimme Shelter,” now brings Apfel’s candid advice and humor to the big screen in “Iris,” out in theaters April 29th. From moments in her Park Avenue home to rummaging for bargains to be mix and matched alongside designer pieces in Apfel’s natural and inspirational high-low blend, the film paints an intimate portrait of woman we both adore and admire.
