CHANEL’s recent Balade En Méditerranée Cruise Collection for 2020/21 was supposed to take place on the island of Capri … until it got sidetracked by the pandemic. So for the first time in the brand’s history, the collection was launched digitally and the looks were created using fabric and materials that were already on hand. That said, trust CHANEL to have totally brought it just the same.

Personally, I found the beauty created for the show spot-on: not only are the looks 100% wearable, but appropriate for the theme and truly enhance the models’ natural beauty without covering it all up. Don’t get me wrong; I love a theatrical look on occasion, but as this is a summer inspired collection, anything more than what Lucia Pica did here, would most certainly have been overkill.

Inspired by the glitterati who used to descend onto the Italian & French Rivieras in the 60s, this collection debuted on CHANEL’s digital platform last Monday — a far cry from the usual seaside locales of past Cruise collections (ie: Havana, Seoul). This is Virginie Viard’s second Cruise offering as Director for CHANEL and apart from the change in presentation, the luxury label also opted to use fabrics already in stock, as well as recycling pieces from the Spring 2020 collection. The entire collection harkens back to a more carefree time, with pieces that can work from a day spent frolicking at the beach … then heading out to dinner, all with just a few little tweaks. Personally, I am down for anything with a beachy/boho/gypsy vibe and I can absolutely visualize myself wearing every single item pictured. Now if only I could afford them all . Sigh
