Azzedine Alaïa in the 21st Century

Azzedine Alaïa is the last great couturier working today, drawing the patterns himself, cutting the fabrics and sewing his own designs. They are timeless and purely deal with the female shape, focusing on the perfect cut and fit while utilising the most luxurious fabrics and incorporating minute, handmade details. I knew all the facts beforehand but I never actually understood them until I stepped foot into the museum. While in Groningen I visited the famous Groninger Museum, specifically to see the above Azzedine Alaïa exhibition and it made a forever lasting impression on me. I don’t think I could ever have appreciated these other-worldly designs without having seem them up close and seeing/feeling such intricately cut patterns made out of the most difficult and untamable fabrics. I hope these images speak more than my words can express.
