Reading Comprehension Bookmark Reminders (Printables)

When my oldest was younger she could read like a machine! We were so excited that she could read so well, and with so much inflection in her voice as she did so. While that was exciting, one of the main things she would have a problem with would be comprehension. She could read like the dickens, but when you asked her “What did you just read? What was the main point?”, she would not have any idea. We would practice reading, and eventually she overcame that small deficit. Now that my younger one is learning to read, I want to help her with these Reading Comprehension Bookmark Reminders.

The goal of the bookmark reminder is simple, and asks just a few questions.

What was this section about?

What was the main idea?

What stuck out to you the most in this section?

The goal for comprehension is to start small, and then work our way up. When first starting with my little one I am going to ask her these simple questions after reading one page.

When she starts getting the hang of it, I will progress to her and I reading two pages, then three, and then on up until she can read full sections. While I know that will be a long way down the road, starting early will help her get the hang of comprehending what she is reading.

You can start these at early ages. I like to do this already with my youngest while she listens to me read. It lets me know she is paying attention, and also helps her practice listening and understanding. (We are still a work in progress on the LISTENING part.)

I created these free printable bookmarks in several different colors. You can easily make these by printing them out on cardstock, laminating if you wish, and then punching a hole in the top to add a yarn or ribbon.
