Capaneus

The IRL Danny Ocean, Michel van Rijn's comments about Damien Hirst's 'art' being crap kind of swayed my opinion about Hirst's work for a bit (a lot of it is mass produced garbage tbh). Then Hirst pull this out of his ass, and oh my god, I'm back in love.

Capaneus is a piece that is part of his 'Entomology' series and features hundreds of insect species placed in intricate geometric shapes and fixed in place with gloss paint.

I'm pretty squeamish about insects which are alive, and would scream/cry/runtomymommy if a creepy crawly got on me, but I'm mostly alright with dead – pinned for science and art – bugs. Capaneus draws my mind to the ancient Egyptian use and representation of Scarab Beetles in art. It also looks like an insect kaleidoscope and I find this piece extremely beautiful. Yay Damien Hirst!
