do epic shit | because you deserve to be happy

Amy from Créatrice Mondial has wonderful advice for us all: Stop comparing yourself to others, find your own voice, choose your own path, and don’t forget to do epic shit. This blog post couldn’t have come at a better time, because I needed that reminder. My husband and I did do something a little crazy this year (we bought a house via FaceTime) but we also want to achieve other goals like traveling the world, running walking another 5k, and expanding my photography business. Sometimes it’s just difficult to get started.

How about you? Do you struggle with this? If so, read on and be inspired, my friends. Read on. (and after you read this, you had better do epic shit).

Do Epic Shit.

I hope Rachel doesn’t mind that I’m suggesting somewhat colorful language on her blog, but that’s a bit how I roll. Plus I love that quote, don’t you?

It’s so concise, so direct, and so to the point. The only response: okay! As if there was another option? I don’t know about you, but sometimes I feel like the things I have done aren’t quite “epic” enough. It’s easy to fall into the pattern of comparing myself to others. So-and-so has wayyy better photos than I do… or blah blah is getting 1,000 likes per photo while I’m lucky to scrape 100… you know the drill. We’re all guilty of the comparison syndrome, even if we know we shouldn’t do it.

That’s why I consider it so important to figure out your own path. Your own voice. Your own course of action that just feels right. I like to put it in those terms because I often work intuitively (which used to drive my art professors absolutely nuts when trying to teach me theory). But, if it works for me, why would I adopt another method that feels forced? This holds true to the blogging world, the business world, life in general, and any other area you could imagine. And yet it’s one we forget so often – how to find that spark, and hold on to it.

So what about that pressure to do something epic? What if it’s not the biggest next most awesomest thing in the entire history of time? That’s something we all grapple with. I think the important thing to remember is that the label “epic” is not given externally. Epic could be a mother getting through her day without the normal degree of chaos and getting her children to bed on time. Or it could be hitting that new benchmark for your business and surpassing your goals. The concept of epic is relative.

I’m about to embark on an epic journey myself. I’m going to run a half marathon. Sure… regular runners may be able to do this easily, but for me, this is epic. I’ve spent far too much time in front of the computer, and my fitness has suffered as a result. I’m sure many of you are familiar with that scenario. My extra motivation for this little (huge) endeavor of mine? I’m entered in a race – in Napa Valley, California. This July… and I’ve partnered with the people of Destination Races to document my experience. I start training in the beginning of March, and will be documenting my experience through weekly blog posts (with link up!), a hashtag for Twitter and Instagram (#RaceToWineCountry), a Flipboard magazine, and a weekly newsletter. You can find more information on my Race to Wine Country page. Because I want to show YOU that EVERYONE can do epic shit. Even me… once I finish this glass of wine and get off my couch. Old habits die hard you know. ;)
