What’s Blooming in 2015 Spring Makeup Trends

In the previous spring trend post, we focused on what’s new for hair and nails. Today, we’re moving on to makeup, and just like in the previous post, there are some surprising and unexpected trends in this category as well.

Lips

Stay Bold Lips

Usually when spring arrives, lip colors change to brighter and lighter, but not this year. Dark bold lips in plum, red, orange, and berry were spotted all over Spring Fashion Week. Now I know why beauty brands are releasing spring lip colors in brighter, bolder shades than in past years.

I love a bold lip, so I’m excited to keep the trend going through the change of season. Guess I won’t need to rush out and buy a bunch of new spring lipsticks, or will I?

If a bold lip isn’t really your thing, then you can go in the opposite direction, and just wear a sheer lip balm. This was another popular trend spotted on the runways.

Eyes

Coloring Outside the Cat Eye Line

Unfortunately for me, the cat eye doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon. Guess I will still need to work on perfecting the look. (Audible Sigh) What is different for spring is that the cat eye is going bolder and blacker, and even more dramatic. Maybe my cat eye skills don’t have to be perfect after all.

Models at a variety of spring shows were seen wearing cat eyes that were thicker on top, and on bottom. As Glamour Magazine put it, “Herve Leger’s models look like they had traced their upper lids with a thick Sharpie.”

Another big cat eye or eyeliner trend involves trading in the standard black liner for a pop of color, such as neon orange, bright blues, pastels, or even white. Inspired by Pop Art, this look can be subtle or very dramatic, depending on your own personal style. In fact, some makeup artists used stickers, tiny leather stripes, or even lipstick to create their Pop Art look for the runway. I don’t know about the stickers, but I love the idea of using bright pops of color to draw attention to my eyes.

It’s All About That Brown

Another surprising trend in eye makeup for spring is the use of brown. Whether worn in cool tones or warm tones, brown shadows and brown eye looks where extremely popular for Spring Fashion Week.

Designers used this versatile color to create natural, neutral looks, as well as smokey, intense looks. While you might usually think of brown as more of fall shade, I think the color really lends itself to other seasons. I am looking forward to trying out some smokey brown eyes in spring.

Looking Lovely in Lavender

Lavender might not seem like a stretch for spring, after all pastels always seem very appropriate this time of year. The slight twist on the trend this year is how it is being used to make more of an impact.

The perfect example of this was at the Vera Wang show, where models were said to look like wood nymphs as they walked the runway with dark purple eyes. While other makeup artists toned the darkness down a bit for their own creations, it does seem as if the whole purpose of the lavender eye is to create a mood, whether sultry or sweet. I absolutely love a purple eye, so I will definitely be trying these options out.

Face

Barely or not even There at all

The no makeup selfie was all the rage last year, which might be why the barely there, or no makeup trend made its way to the runway. Some shows took it to the extreme, and literally had their models wearing absolutely no makeup, while others used nudes to create that barely there look.

I must be a trendsetter because I have been wearing this look for years, but mostly when I feel too lazy to put on makeup. Of course, I don’t look flawless and airbrushed like any of the models pictured. So next time you run out of the house without makeup, you can just say you are embracing the new spring trend.

What trends are you most excited about this spring?
