Hershey’s 5-Point Star Tutorial

Here are some red, white and blue stars just in time for the 4th of July. Thanks to everyone who requested an Independence Day Hershey’s design. My design was inspired by the little, one-line stars, I used to draw as a child. You know the ones where the star is created by drawing one continuous line. I think this star would also make a cute ornament for Christmas or could be used for other special occasions. And don’t worry if you had your heart set on a 6-point star, I will have a tutorial for a 6-point star in the coming weeks.

If you would like to make your own Hershey’s Star, just follow my step-by-step tutorial below. Please Note: I recommend Stampin’ Up! card stock for all my tutorials. Hershey’s Star Tutorial (5 point)

1. For the first piece of the star, start with a 7-¾” x 1” strip of Real Red card stock. On the long side, score at the 3/8”, 3-½” and 5-5/8” marks.

2. Leave your strip on the Simply Scored and make ½” long score marks at the following measurements: 1-3/8”, 2- ½”, 4- ½” and 6-¾”. At the 5-5/8” score mark, make a ½” pencil line (see blue line). You already scored this mark in step one, but you will need to make a slot here also.

3. Cut along both sides of these ½” marks to create tiny slots 1/16” wide. Then take your paper snips and cut away the tiny strip that remains. Also, place a piece of sticky strip on the 3/8” tab.

4. Fold the strip along the score lines. Remove the sticky strip liner and bring the ends together to form a triangle. Set aside.

5. For the second piece of the star, Start with a 9” x 1” strip of Real Red Card Stock. On the long side, score at the 3/8”, 1-3/8”, 4-½”, 7-5/8” and 8-5/8” marks.

6. Leave your strip on the Simply Scored and make ½” long marks at the following measurements: 2-3/8”, 3-½”, 5-½” and 6-5/8” marks. At the 3/8” and 8-5/8” score marks, make a ½” pencil line (see blue line). You already scored these marks in step five, but you will need to make slots here also.

7. Cut along both sides of these ½” marks to create tiny slots 1/16” wide. Then take your paper snips and cut away the tiny strip that remains.

8. Fold the strip along the score lines as shown. Please note: For this step I have not folded the entire strip yet.

9. Place the triangle from step 4 exactly as it was shown in that photo. Now take the folded strip from step 8 and interlock the slots as shown.

10. Fold the remaining right leg of the strip and interlock it with the bottom slot on the triangle. Next fold the tab end of the left leg of the strip as shown. Finally bend the left leg so that interlocks with the slot on the bottom of the triangle. Set aside.

11. For the point filler strips, cut a 5” x 3” piece of Real Red card stock. On the 3” side, score at the 1” and 2” marks.

12. On the 5” side, cut into one inch strips.

13. Fold these strips into triangles.

14. Fit the triangles into the points of the star.

15. Pop five Hershey’s kisses into the points of the star. If you don’t mind the hole in the middle, you could stop at this step and leave the star as is.

16. For the first middle piece, cut an 11” x 1” strip of Real Red card stock. Score at 1”, 2”, 3”, 4”, 5” and 6” marks.

17. Fold the strip along the score lines and loosely roll the rest of the strip around the middle of your stylus tool.

18. Bring the strip together to form a pentagon with the rolled end on the inside. Insert this strip in the pentagon center of the star. The rolled up end of the strip will need to uncurl a bit more than shown in the photo.

19. For the second middle piece, cut an 11” x 1” strip of card stock. Score at the 1”, 2”, 3” and 4” marks.

20. Fold the strip along the score lines. Place a kiss in the center of the triangle you have created with the folds. Roll the rest of the strip around the triangle.

21. Insert the kiss wrapped strip into the center of the pentagon.
