Valentine’s Ideas: DIY Doily Envelopes

Since Valentine’s Day is nearing, here’s a DIY tutorial I’d like to share with you. Making Doily Envelopes isn’t really a new idea. I’m pretty sure some of you have seen it before in wedding and party photos just the ones found here. I think this is a creative and economical way to make letters to your special someone. And who says it should be for a lover? You can make it for a friend, your sibling or a stranger any special day. The thing is, square doilies are hard to come by from where I’m searching so I had to make do with a round one. Here’s a step-by-step on how to make doily envelopes using round doilies.

To get started, all you need are the following: 1. Doily, which you can buy at the supermarket or a baking goods shop, 2. Scissors, 3. Glue, 4. Scrap papers to write on, and 5. Colored tape (optional) or any craft material you can find to design your letter or the envelope. Read more to see how it’s done.

First step, fold the left and right sides of your doily (we will call these “flaps”). The width of the flap should be proportional to the size of the doily. Their width can also depend on the size of the envelope you’re making. If you want the envelope to be small, make bigger flaps. My flap is around 1.5″ wide.

Open the left and right flaps you made earlier and fold the lower 1/3 of the doily to the center.

From the steps we did earlier, there will be creases on the lower right and left corners of the folded doily. Lift this section.

Fold that section to the center. It should look like the photo above. This is to create an angle similar to a regular envelope.

Fold in the left flap that we folded in the 1st step.

Do the same for the right side and fold the flap inwards.

Glue the left and right flaps. You might want to use a solid glue or paste to avoid mess. Be careful that the glue isn’t going through underneath. Otherwise, you won’t be able to put a letter inside your envelope.

Tada! Now you have a functioning doily envelope.

Next we make the card inside. I used spare colored paper, scrap paper and washi tape to make mine. You can draw and paint on your card or use neon colored paper. It’s up to you how to design it! The more vibrant your card is, the more the colors can be seen from the outside of the envelope.

Make sure your card can fit inside the envelope. You can fold it however way you want.

To seal the envelope, you can use a sticker or a stamp, washi tape, and so on. It’s up to you!

If you don’t want to glue your envelope, you can use tape.

Here’s another way to seal the envelope. I used twine and dried blossoms.

And that’s it! Have fun making your doily envelope! If you have any questions, feel free to comment below or share to us how your doily envelope went.
