Steal This Look: The $4K Parisian Kitchen from Two DIY Experts

You might think the impressively low price tag ($4,200) is what makes this renovation from Parisian designers Heju so exceptional, but it’s also the size. The kitchen is nested in a chambre de bonne, Paris’s answer to worker’s housing in the top floor garret of most buildings. The rooms are typically 65 to 130 square feet; they’re impossibly small (I know because I lived in one for a year) and any semblance of a kitchen is rarely functional. But Heju solved the problem with grey and white color-blocked walls, plywood fronts on budget cabinets, Smeg appliances and more. Here is the full breakdown to replicate the look for small kitchens (and small budgets) everywhere.

Above: Architect couple Hélène Pinaud and Julien Schwartzmann of Heju created the kitchen in their 538-square-foot garret near Place de la Republic in Paris. See more from Kitchen of the Week: Two Young Paris Architects Completely Redo Their Kitchen for Under $4,300.
Above: Their one splurge was the handmade dining table from Stattmann Neuemoebel (see below) paired with two vintage Cesca chairs they already had. For the full breakdown of costs see our post Kitchen of the Week: Two Young Paris Architects Completely Redo Their Kitchen for Under $4,300.

Paint & Materials

Above: For a similar bright, warm white see Benjamin Moore’s Simply White paint color.
Above: For a pale grey, Farrow & Ball’s Cornforth White is a similar tone to what’s used on color-blocked wall.
Above: Hélène and Julien built the kitchen with Delinia Cabinet Units from Leroy Merlin (the French equivalent of The Home Depot) They faced the units with doors cut themselves from birch plywood. “We drilled little holes as handles and protected the doors by rolling on a matte varnish; they’re hung with basic metal hinges,” they say. Shown here is the Delinia Undercounter Drawer for Furniture; €29.90 at Leroy Merlin.

Above: The electric cooktop is a Smeg design available in the EU. For a US equivalent, the 26-Inch Smeg Standard Induction Cooktop (SIMU524B) is available at Martin Appliance.
Above: The Smeg Elementi Wall Oven (shown here) is available only in the EU. For a similar style the Smeg Evolution Electric Oven (SC770U) is available through Smeg and Smeg retailers.

Faucets & Fixtures

Above: The Brass Tap Bath Tapwell Faucet is from Superfront, the makers of Ikea cabinet solutions and hacks; €500. For more on Superfront see our post Superfront: An Instant Upgrade for Ikea Cabinets.
Above: The couple got their sink at Ikea (“they stopped offering our model in France, but it’s similar to the Havsen,” they say.) The white Havsen Sink is $126 at Ikea.

Above: The sconce next to the shelves is Atelier Areti’s Cone Wall Light, which the couple already owned.
Above: The ceiling sconce is the Zangra White Porcelain Lamp 001; €32.55 at Zangra.

Above: The big splurge of the renovation is the Profile Table designed by Sylvain Willenz for Stattmann Neuemoebel. For more on the furniture company see our post Pared-Back Furniture from Stattmann Neue Moebel, a Fourth-Generation Company in Germany.
Above: The chairs surrounding the dining table in the Heju apartment are a vintage find. Knoll continues to produce the Marcel Breuer 1928 Cesca Chair with Arms, shown in Hardwood Beech, for $1,595. You can find the chairs often at vintage sources like 1st Dibs, eBay, Chairish, and Etsy.

Above: The Oval Porcelain Door Handle is available in 7mm for France and 8mm for Belgium and the Netherlands; €32.55 at Zangra.
Above: The Porcelain Keyhole Covers are €12.60 each at Zangra.
