Travel: San Francisco

We flew into San Francisco the day before the NWM specifically so we could explore the city. I hadn't been there in almost 12 years, so I was itching to sightsee and used the half marathon as an excuse. Visiting Alcatraz was on the top of my list of things to do, but unfortunately the government shutdown prevented me from pre-purchasing tickets and quite honestly, it turned out that there wasn't enough time on Saturday to tour it anyway. So I settled for a bunch of pictures and vowed to return in the spring.
We did, however, get to explore Fisherman's Wharf after riding the famous Trolly down there. We spent most of our time walking from pier-to-pier, shopping in the little shops, eating clam chowder bread bowls at Boudin (delicious!) and indulging in ice cream with the excuse that it was pre-race fuel.

We walked up to Lombard street, which was quite the trek for legs that would be running in a race the very next day, and then back down it before walking about 5 miles worth of hills back to our hotel. It definitely wasn't the brightest decision, but it was worth every minute since we got to walk through Little Italy, China Town, and back through Union Square.

Next up was dinner at a local restaurant a few steps from our hotel (our legs thanked us for that short walk), and back before crashing in bed. We were so exhausted, had throbbing legs and had a big race the next day! To see my NWM recap, click here.
