Light packing isn't normally one of my stronger skills, I tend to be the girl sitting on her case just to get the zip round/heading to the check-in desk in fear I'll be chucked off the flight for being over the luggage-limit. Throw in some unpredictable spring weather which leaves you insisting that you really
do need 8 pairs of shoes and you land yourself in a real packing conundrum. But a couple of weeks ago I went to Rome on a 5-night spring break and just about nailed it in the light-packing department. So I thought I'd show you the pieces I took to provide me with umpteen outfit choices for a few days of sight-seeing, fancy eating and piazza perusing whilst battling lots of wind, rain and thankfully, shine - all of which fitted snuggly into my carry-on case.
1 Jacket: The most versatile of all jackets has to be a classic leather jacket. It looks casual enough with jeans and trainers but smart enough thrown over an LBD for fine (in this case Italian) dining.
2 Blouses/Shirts: When you've only got 1 jacket, shirts are blouses are darn perfect for throwing over a crop top when things get chilly during the daytime or buttoned up with a smart pair of trousers and heels at night.
2 Long Sleeve Tops: Things can get pretty chilly at this time of year. I took one cashmere jumper which came in pretty handy on the over air-conned flight and my favourite breton-striped jersey.
3 Short Sleeve Tops: For when things get a little warmer, all of these looked super casual for daytime with a pair of jeans and trainers, swapped with a pair of heels for dinner. I tend to go for whites and blacks which will go with any print or colour of trouser.
4 Pairs of Trousers: This the only department where I possibly over-did it but those gorgeous H&M 70s-style wide-legged trousers just couldn't be resisted. I took one pair of more casual black jeans, one smart pair of blue jeans and some cropped print trousers. These were fab for daytime but could be easily dressed-up, teamed with boots and heels.
2 Evening Dresses: The obvious necessity for some of the fancier evenings out.
2 Bags: One for daytime, one for evening. A little leather backpack comes highly recommended for a city break, it looks super chic whilst not causing your shoulder to ache when you're covering miles of sightseeing. For dinner's out at night, a simple black clutch bag, like mine from Whistles is all you need.
4 Pairs of Shoes: One pair of trainers, a pair of boots, a pair of sandals and a pair of heels for evening had all terrains and weathers covered. You're spending most of the time on your feet so a comfy pair of trainers and sandals for warmer climates are a must. My boots were a life-saver in the rain and also helped, along with a pair of heels to smarten up any outfit for evening.
