Natural Make Up and Acuvue Define Contact Lenses!

I've been a glasses wearer for over 14 years, and during those awkward mid to late teen years when I felt incredibly self-conscious in my glasses, a contact lens wearer. It's been a few years since I last had contact lenses, but I've been bitten by the lens bug again. Don't get me wrong I still love my glasses but I'd almost forgotten what my face looks like without them. After being reminded of how nice they can be, I think I'm going to get some lenses very soon to have around as an option.

Acuvue invited me to trial their Define lenses and I must admit that at first I was a little skeptical. I wasn't sure if the idea of adding a purely aesthetic element to a medical product was particularly appropriate. Importantly first and foremost they remain a medical product, and the more I thought about it the more I appreciated the thought of having the option to safely (because they have to be fitted to you) try a different look whilst simultaneously correcting my vision.

Brand Statement
  • NEW 1-DAY JOHNSON & JOHNSON ACUVUE® DEFINE™ to enhance the natural beauty of your eyes.
  • Inspired by the beauty of the natural eye, the lens combines a dark ring around the coloured portion of your eye with a luminous-effect pattern, resulting in a brighter, more memorable you. Choose from one of two designs to suit your eye colour. NATURAL SHIMMER™ for more depth and intensity or NATURAL SPARKLE™ to add a luminous brightening effect.

Although I have an astigmatism (-1.00 for reference) and these particular lenses don't come in a version specifically designed for that, my optician was able to account for it and calculated the most suitable prescription for me. It took a few minutes for the lenses to settle once I'd put them in, but I think we were both pleasantly surprised in the end by how good my vision is with them. They do sit a few millimeters low (noticeable if you really look up close, but not otherwise) but we agreed that if I chose to, I could wear them for up to 12 hours at a time and they are very comfortable.

Aesthetics wise I was also pleasantly surprised, and because my prescription is the same in both eyes I was able to trial both the Natural Shimmer and the Natural Sparkle. Prior to my fitting I'd spent a bit of time looking at pictures with and without lenses, and because everyone's eyes are different the results really do vary. I assumed that the Natural Sparkle would suit me best because my eyes are blue, but my experience proves that you should try both because you might be surprised!

Acuvue Define Natural Shimmer

L: Natural Shimmer. // R: Natural Sparkle.
Natural Sparkle.
Natural Sparkle defines the outer part of my eye ever so slightly, making my eyes look a little bigger and brightening my natural blue colour. They made a small but noticeable difference and a couple of people have remarked on how bright-eyed I look when I'm wearing them, which is always welcomed especially in the AM because I'm not a morning person!

Natural Shimmer.
Natural Shimmer was my unexpected favourite of the two because it adds an almost smokey look with depth and a lot of definition. They still look very natural, those who don't see me all the time wouldn't necessarily know I was wearing coloured lenses, but my mum (who obviously sees me all the time and is very familiar with my natural eye colour) noticed immediately. I love the result and if these lenses were made specifically for astigmatism (I'm hoping if they're popular enough they will be!) I would absolutely buy a few month's supply immediately.
It seems a little strange discussing my favourite way to wear contact lenses, I know, but I do have a favourite way to wear these. They make the most impact on me when I'm wearing a minimal make up look. A little of the NARS Tinted Moisturiser with the Seventeen Stay Time Concealer gives a beautiful, very natural looking base.

Benetint from Benefit gives a pretty flush to my cheeks and the Sleek Pout Polish in Bare Minimum makes my lips look full and hydrated. The Seventeen All Doll'd Up Mascara is the newest addition to my make up bag and gives my lashes enough curl, providing I remember to give them a good squeeze with an eyelash curler, that they actually make an impact over my hooded eyelids.

There is a voucher you can download & print for a free five day trial of these lenses on the Acuvue website here. They really pleasantly surprised me, so if you're interested it's definitely worth popping along to give them a try!
