Every September, designers, fashionistas, and other A-listers gather in New York to agree what's hot and what's not, show off their style, and dictate trends for the upcoming season. While designers presented spring 2017 collection, fashion-lovers, journalists and editors showed us what’s wearable and trendy for this autumn. Here are the latest fashion trends spotted this September in New York.

All eyes on sleeves

This fashion week was all about statement sleeves. Flared sleeves were a huge trend last season, but now the designers presented sleeve slits and we've seen them on various shows – from Phillip Lim and Lacoste to Michael Kors and Prabal Gurung. Beside the Flashdance shoulder trend, which is a timeless classic, a single shoulder cutout drew attention and settled as a must-have statement for the upcoming spring season.
Michael Kors added ruffles to his sleeves, while Proenza Schouler played with the well-constructed looks. If you're skeptical about this trend, just have a look at fashion journalist Anna Dello Russo rocking it in a Saint Laurent dress with sleeves resembling a black swan.

A white shirt taken to another level

A bit over-sized, simple white shirt never really goes out of style, but this season, designers gave it a somewhat modern twist. Alexander Wang added tie details to a traditional shirt as well as asymmetrical sleeves and collars. The Banana Republic and DKNY presented white shirt dresses making it a perfect addition to anyone's work-wear wardrobe.

In spring 2017, it's all going to be about unexpected hemlines, loose cuts, and interesting embroideries – as seen on Anya Ziurova, Jillian Davidson, and Camille Charriere.

Modern twist on old-fashioned jewelry

Old-fashioned jewelry inspired by baroque and ancient pieces was a big hit on many shows in 2016 and continued to dominate the runways in New York, as well. Tiaras, body chains, brooches - it all looks very luxurious with chunky gemstones and golden details. Brides-to-be should look forward to this trend since it’s something that can easily be transformed into beautiful bridal jewelry.

Check out Alexander McQueen’s head jewelry and body chains, Gucci’s oversized pearls, or Balenciaga’s striking mix of crystals and pigments. The best thing about old-fashioned accessories is that they can easily be morphed into modern attire and still appear quite sophisticated.

White boots made for strutting

Fashionistas like Alexa Chung and Megan Gray stunned the street style photographers with a comeback of a long-forgotten trend - white ankle booties. They dominated street fashion in the ‘90s, but we’ve seen fashion repeating itself many times, so white boots are rather the rule than the exception.

With a pointed toe and small heel, they make a perfect addition to any outfit - from jeans to midi skirts. We’ve seen Kendall Jenner wear one of those earlier - she styled them with mom jeans and cut out Metallica T-shirt, so there’s an idea for you.

Exotic vibe of tribal necklaces

From Roberto Cavalli’s lucky charms earrings to Prada’s fetish objects, tribal accessories ruled the runway shows in New York this autumn. Heavy, oversized, opulent necklaces are going to be a big fashion yes for the upcoming season, especially those made of big hoops and hammered metal that we’ve seen on Tom Ford’s models. They match perfectly with boho style that’s been trending for the last few season, but it can also work with minimalist wardrobe as a single statement piece to complete the outfit.

Some of the trends have been already embraced, while for the others we’ll wait and see if they’re going to stick around. The best thing about this NYFW is the diversity - there’s really something for every taste. It doesn’t matter if you’re into minimalist clothing or you like to flaunt in various cuts and colors - you’ll certainly find inspiration for your everyday and special occasions outfits.
