pregnancy body care products

When we talk about pregnancy, beyond the joy that raises bring a baby into the world, many women get nervous thinking about all the changes and processes that the body will go through. Beyond fear, it’s the perfect time to raise awareness of the importance of taking care of our bodies in general and about our skin particularly. Some of these changes that our skin undergoes during pregnancy is that it becomes more oily -which is a drawback for all of us who already have combination/oily skin -, dark blemishes due to the levels of hormones that interfere into melanin production and other skin problems such as irritation or sensitivity, and acne as well.

Hopefully, most of these things occur in small doses in most of women, however, the skin on our body as the belly, chest and legs stretched to its limit. We always talk about how important it is to moisturize the skin but this is a thing that we barely pay attention in a daily basis because of the rush, and yet it’s the first thing you worry about -or you should- once you find out you’re pregnant.

I did a little of research and the most common ingredients present in pregnancy creams, specially those ones which are aimed at preventing stretch marks, are rosehip and sweet almonds oil, and shea/cocoa butter.

My products:

During the first trimester when the baby bump is still unnoticed, I’ve been applying twice a day (in the morning and before going to sleep) moisturizing body lotion which had shea butter. I’ve applied it on the belly, breasts and thighs.

Once I entered on the second trimester, I started using Bio-Oil twice a day in the same body zones. The downside of oils is that they are sticky and greasy because it’s absorbed more slowly than creams, so some days I applied the oil before going to sleep and the body milk in the mornings. Needless to say that it’s more effective to use raw shea butter instead of a body milk which has just the ingredient in its composition, but then we are back in the same situation with the oil…

A couple weeks ago, I ran out of Bio-Oil and while I was doing some more research, I applied Nivea cream -the one that comes in the blue can- which it’s very moisturizing.

So after doing my new research, I bought a cream – Trofolastín Anti-strech- that helps prevent stretch marks and helps reduce the existing. What I liked the most is that it’s a cream not an oil, so I can apply it twice a day without problems! I love how it smells and it really leave my skin very soft. Lucky me that I still don’t have any stretchmark but I’m not having the same luck with cellulite who made its appearance on my thighs. In fact, I’m not really worry about it because it’s too little and I know that once I back on track with sports, creams and toning exercises it will completely disappear! Anyway, maybe I can start to use a cream for cellulite but I know that pregnants can not use any product which has retinol-A on their composition. Any suggestion?

About my face, I don’t feel it too oily but a little bit more than before getting pregnant. Also, I have some pimples from time to time on my chin (due to hormone levels) but my biggest fear was that acne would return. This is very common specially if you have suffered non-hormonal acne as me and while you are in this process, it’s likely to happen but I’m being lucky enough by now :) I’m mentioning this because many women develop acne as a result of pregnancy, so my recommendation is this: if you feel your skin very difference from what it used to be and you are having more redness and pimples, don’t hesitate and make an appointment with your dermatologist!

In my case, I wash my face twice a day with neutral detergent (the same I used) and I’m not using any facial moisturizer because I used to use one that it was formulated by my dermatologist but it has antibiotic and other components that are not indicated during pregnancy… That’s why. Of course, I’m very disciplined with cleaning process and all my foundations are oil-free, in order to prevent problems with my acne. Anyway, you asked me a lot about my acne experience, how I did it, which is my routine now that I got rid of it and what type of make-up I’m using… No worries because I have ready an article talking about foundations for oily skin with acne problems, and another one where I’m sharing my experience with acne. Stay tuned!

I hope you like this article and you find it helpful somehow :) Lots of love!
