Sewing up some diapers for Baby!

Well, the time has come that I'm feeling a bit pressured to get some things sewn up for baby. I also have some knitting projects in the ol' Ravelry queue that I'd like to do for baby, but I've still got to acquire the yarn and smaller needles!
Anyway, back to the sewing. My sister kind of put me on to this interesting DIY baby diaper making book she saw at Joann. It's called Babyville Boutique. When I started looking into the company and offerings online I discovered they sell all sorts of coordinating PUL fabrics and elastics for making your own baby diapers. I bought what I thought was enough PUL fabric, elastic and coordinating velcro to make 3 diaper covers in the newborn size. I've got 2 made up below, but I ran short on the elastic. The 2-color packs sold for $6.99 were only enough for 2 diapers. It seemed like I should have gotten a bit more out of each pack. The good thing is the diapers themselves went together so fast too, taking only an hour each. The book also includes directions for making all different styles of all-in-one diapers and adding gussets or other details. I have only attempted the covers so far, but I'd like to branch out and make some all-in-ones. So, is this even cost effective or should I just save my precious sewing time for other projects and buy the ready-made diapers?

These Babyville Boutique PUL fabrics are seriously very cute, but a bit on the expensive side. I bought the 3 pack of pre-cut fabric so I could try out a few prints. This was $14.99 and is basically less than 1 yard of fabric. By the bolt at my local Joann the fabrics themselves are $14.99 a yard, so you get a bit of price break for buying by the yard.

Here's what I spent for 2 diapers:

• $14.99 for the 3 pack of PUL (enough PUL for 3 newborn size, less that 1 yd of total fabric)
• $6.99 for the 2 pack of elastic (this was disappointingly only enough for 2 diapers)
• $3.49 for hook and loop in a coordinating color (would be enough for probably 2 more diapers)

So total cost so far is $25.47. This makes each diaper cover $12.73 or nearly $13.00. It's true, I do have enough PUL for another diaper, but it's that darn elastic that gets expensive. Also, this doesn't include the cost for other supplies to make the soaker inserts for an all-in-one. Locally I can buy the bumGenius brand all-in-one diapers for $17.99 and that includes 2 inserts. Another option with the Babyville Boutique line is the optional snaps that require a special $20 tool to install. Hmmm. I like the look of the snaps and I've heard they are good for older kids that will pull on the hook and loop, but another sewing tool that's really only single use? I have a hard time with that.

In any case, I can't wait to see my little one outfitted in these adorable diapers! Little over a month to go. I'm in the home stretch!
