Mermaid Baby Gown Tutorial + Owlet Smart Sock Promo
I’ve been excited to finally share this project with you, but mostly excited to finally see my sweet little girl on the outside and in this mermaid gown that I designed for her! I partnered with Owlet Care for this post because putting baby to bed has been stressful for me in the past. That mom-worry sets in hard and fast when I have a baby, and actually even before I have the baby. I am the worrying type and the watch-your-baby-sleep-while-you-should-be-sleeping type. So the postpartum period has been hard and exhausting for me in the past and I think my behavior is pretty common for most moms!
When I learned about the Owlet Smart Sock, I told my husband about it and he said simply “We need that.” That worry affected him, too, especially with our second who was under bili-lights with jaundice for a couple of days. (That was a stressful week!) After 3 nights in the NICU with our newest baby girl, I really came to appreciate all the monitors and the peace of mind that comes with them. The Owlet Smart Sock uses technology similar to that used in the NICU to track your baby’s oxygen levels and heart rate (except it doesn’t beep all night!). Today I’m sharing this FREE pattern for a mermaid or basic gown in size 0-3. This makes a super cute shower gift. Wrap one up with a Smart Sock for a gift or use it on your own baby! I don’t see anything wrong with mermaid tails for boys, but if you want a basic gown with an elastic hem, there are instructions for that as well.
Mermaid Baby Gown Pattern//
Materials:
-1 yard knit fabric
-1/4 yard knit for contrast mermaid tail, or contrast binding (optional)
-16″ of 1/2″ elastic, for basic gown

Helpful Tools:
–pinking shears
-safety pin
Before you start:
-Use a 3/8″ seam allowance unless otherwise noted.
-Use a stretch stitch or zig zag stitch
Instructions:
Print out your pattern pieces and tape them together as shown below. There will be approx 1/2″ extra paper on each edge when printing on 8.5″ by 11″ paper. This pattern is also formatted for A4 printing.
Use the pattern pieces to cut:
-1 Front on fold
-1 Back on fold
-2 Sleeves on fold
-2 Tail lining pieces on fold
-1 front binding
-1 back binding
Start with the binding pieces. Fold both pieces in half and press.
Pin the middle of the front binding piece to the middle of the front gown neckline. The raw edges of the binding and the raw edge of the gown will match up.
Sew the binding to the front 3/8″ from raw edges. Finish seam allowance with serger or zig zag stitch. Press binding UP and seam allowance DOWN. Topstitch along gown neckline, stitching the seam allowance down on the back at the same time. Repeat with back gown piece and back binding.
Lay the back gown piece on top of the front piece, both gown pieces will have the rights side of the fabric FACE UP. Match up the arm holes at the overlap marks. Stretch arm holes to match each other and baste fabric in place with a wide stitch.
Repeat with second sleeve. Then fold the front onto the back with right sides together. Line up the bottom of the sleeves and the side seams. Sew all the way up and pivot at the sleeve. Backstitch at each end. Finish seam allowances.
Almost done! The last step is to line the tail with the tail lining pieces. Start by sewing the two tail lining pieces together with right sides together at the center front and back with 3/8″ seam allowance. Finish the top edge (the straight edge) of the tail lining with serger or zig zag stitch.
Open the tail lining and match it up to the RIGHT side of the baby gown. Right sides will be together. Sew around the bottom edges of the mermaid tail using a 1/4″ seam allowance. Trim the seam allowance with pinking shears or clip it with regular sewing scissors.
Flip tail lining to the inside of the gown. Push out edges carefully and press well. Flatten tail lining and sew around the top of the lining piece to hold it in place.
Basic Gown Variation: cut front and back on dotted line and omit tail lining pieces.
Assemble according to mermaid gown directions. Sew the side seams together and then continue following these directions:
Finish the bottom edge of the gown with a serger or zig zag stitch. Fold under 3/4″ and press well. Stitch close to the raw edge all the way around the hem, leaving about 1″ open.
