Inside Singapore’s “Marvellous Marble Factory” by Designer Olivia Lee

Singapore design festival SingaPlural welcomed a little metamorphic fun last week with a comical installation from industrial designer Olivia Lee entitled “The Marvellous Marble Factory.” The Central Saint Martins graduate aims to, in her own words, “highlight the exquisite nature of marble through the playful subversion of materiality, scale and process.” Part fictional set-up, part educational tour, Lee takes luxurious materials including granite, marble, onyx and quartz, transforming them into a series of small, unexpected objects including ice-lollies and chocolates. Materials often seen in large-scale, these miniature pieces offer visitors the chance to view the stone’s colors and variations close-up. Resembling a confectionary factory line, specially created machinery and tools form part of the imagined back-story, the designer’s humorous exhibition posing a question, “what is more important, consuming the story or the truth?” Find out more.
