Sewing room redo: DIY Pegboard

It’s been almost a month since I last posted a sewing project and a busy month it’s been. I managed to finish my last project right before my birthday, but I never have gotten a chance to wear it anywhere yet.

Sadly, my father in law Bob passed away the day after my birthday. Although he was 90, it was still a surprise as he had been quite robust up until then, and it happened very suddenly. That weekend we hosted our family and friends at our home for a memorial for him. We told stories about him over barbecued hamburgers and reminisced. It wasn’t until that evening when the kids and I started going through his box of belongings that my sister in law had brought over that the heavy feeling of loss set in. He loved to play the harmonica and when we opened up the box that held his old harmonica, the feeling of loss was strong. And I had such a sweet video of him playing it to Lily and Gigi last summer on my old phone, but I had never uploaded it and then my phone broke so the video was lost forever to us, like him. At least,in this life it is.

Between that and our house being a total shambles due to plastering all of the inside walls including my sewing studio for the past month, things have been upside down around here. You can’t imagine how much dust plastering walls creates! We had bumpy cottage cheese type walls and ceilings and I have been wanting to fix them for years. We finally are in the situation to do it. But it’s quite an ordeal of sanding and noise and mess. And me running around like a maniac to the Benjamin Moore paint store over a half hour away to buy lots of little pots to find the ‘perfect’ colors.

Add to that the fact that I’m coaching and running a bit with the cross country high school team at our school as well as playing in a weekday tennis league with matches every week which I have yet to win, and it’s no wonder I haven’t been able to do any sewing. I am totally over-scheduled lately. Excuses, excuses.

But I’m almost done with the sewing studio redo and have a finished project to share today! My big sewing pegboard and shelf. And my nifty ruler and scissor hooks which is self explanatory. But makes a nice photo anyway.

For this project, built by my handyman as I’m not very clever with hammers and nails, we used a pegboard from home depot, some wood scrap pieces for a frame, some leftover molding from the studio windows, a shelf that was in my kitchen, and Annie Sloan chalk paint. However, It does seem simple enough for those with knowledge of using things like saws and levels.

I’m loving this chalk paint! I held out from trying it for a long time because I don’t like jumping on bandwagons, much the same way I never buy trendy patterns when they’re ‘in’, and resisted painting my walls grey because it seemed like everyone in Pinterest was doing it. Or making a pegboard for that matter! Then I may end up trying it later after the buzz dies down, and I’m late to the party, which doesn’t make for the most interesting blog reading, since it’s already been rehashed. Stubborn. For instance, I’m getting ready to make some Ginger jeans. But who on earth wants to read about making Ginger jeans after it’s already been done about a thousand times? Hopefully you do, because I’ll be writing about it.

This Annie Sloan stuff is so popular for good reason. It really does work better than my old method of flat latex paint with glaze and matte polyurethane. I have several projects I’m working on using the chalk paint. I love it! Better late than never.

I used Annie Sloan Antoinette, a true pink, and then some clear wax with a dab of dark wax mixed in with it to soften the brightness of it.

I’ll just say having a pegboard with all my tools I need right in front of my table is really going to make my sewing life so much easier! My tape! There it is!
