London Calling – Quilted Cushions

A British friend of mine celebrated her birthday last week and I know from our occasional wine & whine sessions that she often really misses London. I know the feeling of homesickness well, so I thought she might like a little piece of Britain to brighten up her sofa.

I lived in London in 2001-2002 and I know what a fabulous city it is. I did the typical Aussie living and working in a pub thing (The Chandos on St Martins Lane just on the edge of Trafalgar Square – best location!) and we had a blast. Travelled, worked, ate, drank, and were merry. Good times.

I used the July Star block tutorial by Cluck Cluck Sew to make the feature star, with some London themed fabric (bought randomly at Spotlight Hobart last year when I visited Tassie and I’ve never seen it in another store since!) and some colour coordinated scraps for the star points. This block is a great size for a cushion feature, finishing at about 10.5″ square.

I had an insanely busy week last week so these quilted cushions were made in a hurry. No time for fancy pants quilting – just a simple large scale cross hatch design.

I always do my cushion backs the same way – enclosed zipper using Ms Midge’s tutorial.

I made a pair, and they are both slightly different – the star points are not exactly the same and the backing is different – one is navy, one is red.

Special shout out to all my readers from the UK and special mention to the British expats who miss home. (I’m looking at you Deborah and Sue!)

Now I’m in the mood to make a cup of tea, eat some McVities digestive biscuits (the chocolate ones of course) and watch some EastEnders. Or maybe a Hugh Grant film.
