Choose Skin Health this Summer

*I participated in an Influencer Activation on behalf of Influence Central for Neutrogena. I received samples to facilitate my review and a promotional item to thank me for my participation.

When I was a young girl I would spend every waking moment outside. I lived in the country. If I wasn’t off on adventures with my cousins (I spent every summer with my cousins), I would find something to do on my own.

I’m not exaggerating when I say I would be outside from sun up to sun down.

Back in the day my family didn’t use products to protect our skin from the sun. In fact I would use baby oil on my skin and lie out in the sun for hours on end when I was a teen just to get a tan. I never tanned – I always burned. In fact I had sun poisoning numerous times as a child through my teen years, as well as two cases of heat stroke. To this day my cousin’s talk about the times I had horrible sun poisoning. My face swelled up and was oozing. It was a horrific site.

Many years ago, when my daughter was a toddler and my son was an infant I went to the dermatologist to check out my skin. He found six “suspicious” moles on my back that he insisted on removing immediately. It was NOT a pleasant experience. It hurt A LOT when the medication he used to numb my skin wore off. I never want to go through that again!

That is when it hit me – the sun can be potentially VERY dangerous to your skin health – and even your overall health. Thinking back on all those years of not wearing an ounce of sunscreen, and all those times I had sun poisoning, made me scared for not only my health but also the health of my family. From that moment on I insisted that my kids wear sunscreen every time they would go out in the sun.

My husband also never wore sunscreen growing up. He’s 100% Italian and has beautiful olive skin. In the summer his skin would turn a beautiful golden brown. He THOUGHT he was “immune” against sunburn until one day at the beach he got a really bad one on his back and shoulders. From that point on he always made sure to wear sunscreen when going out in the sun.

Did you know that only 20% of people use an SPF daily – as in EVERY DAY (you can get burned even in the winter months). Did you also know that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer during their life time? You would think knowing that scary statistic that people would be more likely to take their skin health seriously and apply sunscreen daily, but they don’t.

With this being summer time, people are spending more time outdoors trying to soak up the sun and fresh air before the cool weather rolls around again and we are all stuck indoors again.

Did you know that sunburns in children increase their odds of developing skin cancer later in life? Knowing this will you let your child play outside WITHOUT applying sunscreen?

People with sensitive skin and Eczema also need to take extra care in protecting their skin from the sun’s harmful rays. I suffer from both. My face is sensitive to certain products and I suffer from Eczema on my face, neck, scalp and occasionally patches on my abdomen, arms and hands.

Neutrogena offers consumers several SPF products to help protect the skin health of you and your family. They also offer products that provide adults and babies with sensitive skin and Eczema a safe sunscreen option that protects using naturally sourced sunscreen ingredients. In fact, the National Eczema Association has recently awarded its Seal of Acceptance to five Neutrogena Sun products. The five products include:

  • NEUTROGENA® Pure & Free® Baby Faces Ultra Gentle Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 45
  • NEUTROGENA® Pure & Free® Baby Sunscreen Stick Broad Spectrum SPF 60
  • NEUTROGENA® Pure & Free® Baby Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 60
  • NEUTORGENA® Sensitive Skin Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 60
  • NEUTROGENA® Pure & Free™ Liquid Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50

Neutrogena sent me a few of their products to review – Pure & Free™ Liquid Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50, Pure & Free® Baby Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 60 and Sensitive Skin Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 60 .

I’ve already used the Sensitive Skin Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 60 several times, including the other day at our daughter’s high school graduation which was held outdoors. We had to get there at the very least two hours earlier to ensure we had a place to park and sit. With 649 graduates and their families it was beyond crowed. We arrived two hours earlier to avoid most of the crowd, but that meant sitting outside for two hours, plus over an hour for the actual graduation ceremony.

Being fair skinned I was afraid I would burn but thanks to Neutrogena’s Sensitive Skin Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 60 I did not have one spot of sunburn. I am very grateful for that. It was my #1 concern the whole time we were there.

I used the Pure & Free™ Liquid Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 on my face. Actually I’ve used this several times since I received it to review.

Sunscreens made for your face often bother my skin or leave me feeling greasy and sticky (which I don’t like). Sometimes they even make me break out. It goes on white but quickly absorbs and the color fades away.

Pure & Free™ Liquid Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 is a lightweight liquid that you apply to your face before your moisturizer and make up. You can even wear it alone with no make up (ideal when you are going for a swim).

I didn’t even realize I was wearing it. Once it absorbed into my skin and I went on with my normal beauty routine I didn’t even know that I was wearing sunscreen. It also didn’t bother my skin and so far I have not had any breakout issues.

I like this lightweight sunscreen for my skin compared to others I have tried. It’s by far my favorite and I fully intend on purchasing it when my current bottle runs out.

We also received the Pure & Free® Baby Sunscreen Lotion Broad Spectrum SPF 60 but we haven’t really used it yet. My kids are teens (not babies) but it would still work on adult skin.

This product is in a stick form. It’s small enough to fit inside your purse or backpack for unexpected outdoor time or if you need to re-apply your sunscreen. I plan on keeping this tube along with my travel products so I can take it with me the next time I travel so I know I always have sunscreen with me.

I did try applying it to my skin. It also absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave any residue on your skin or leave it feeling sticky or greasy.
