Seeing Double

You might say that I’m someone who loves the idea of Winter. I love sharp inhalations of cold air in your lungs and crunchy leaves and mist on the horse paddock out the back of my place. I love burrito-ing in fluffy doonas. I love any excuse to have two pots of soy chai with extra cinnamon in one day – though I hardly wait for the chills to come around before I’m on that habit. But when Sydney finally rolls into the colder months, there are a few stellar, crisp and golden days at the outset, then it’s all London-worthy inky drizzle from there. All of a sudden, you lose motivation, you fatigue at the drop of a hat, and by the time October comes to the rescue, you realise that you’ve spent the last three months suffocating. Depressed yet?

My one constant Winter joy though, as I’m sure

you know, is layering all too many garments at once. Not because it’s a terribly reliable sport – in fact, it ends up being fairly inconvenient in more humid climates like Sydney’s. Even in Winter, your carefully constructed stacks of leather on suede on wool on leather conjure a sweat pretty soon after you leave the house. By the time you get to the office, you’re already peeling off the outermost shells of your piece of art, and by the end of a long day wallowing in cabin fever, your razor sharp coat is on the floor, your shirting is well unbuttoned, and the jersey basics that formed such an excellent canvas for additional shirts as skirts as belts as shirts just look like pyjamas now. And yet it remains ridiculously satisfying (and temperature appropriate at the crack of dawn).

Indeed, they say if you can achieve one thing (one thing) before 9AM, you’re cooking with gas. I count making a bulky sweater look streamlined with a leather jacket around the waist and a man coat over the shoulders to be a serious achievement.

None of this is to say that my single-sweater-jacket-pant look here is anywhere close to as wild as I can get on the layering front. I just found these fun shots of Vanessa and I getting weird one crisp morning a few New York Winters ago on a forgotten hard drive (as I seem to be making a habit of), and had nothing else to say except that I have been sitting in my office studying like a freak for the past 12 hours, and am likely incoherent.

Bye. I’m hungry.
