How I Teach My Kids About Their Culture

Hi friends, hope you’re having a great week!

Over the past weekend, I took my family to Westfield San Francisco Centre for more Lunar New Year celebrations. Did you go? There were so many live performances and music. It was definitely fun for Hayden and Hadley to experience Westfield in a whole new way.

As an Asian-American parent, I think one of my challenges is to teach and maintain the Chinese culture and language with my kids, even I have a hard time keeping up sometimes. But whenever possible, I expose Hayden and Hadley to their culture in really fun ways that we, as a family, enjoy together — like this traditional Lunar New Year dinner we had at M.Y. China a few weeks ago. I think it’s important for them to learn about their heritage, be proud, and hopefully one day, they will share this with their kids. I know, I think so far ahead!

This was the first time they saw lion dancing and being exposed to Chinese cultural performances. I was curious to see how they would react. Would they find it weird? Scarred? Totally not into it? To my surprise, they were absorbing everything like a sponge and loved every performances they saw. They were excited to get red envelopes and wanted more lion dancing after the show. It was just the cutest, and really, it made George and I so happy!

Here are some highlights from our Westfield Lunar New Year Celebration outing. Be sure to check out Westfield SF Centre’s Facebook page or search hashtag #WestfieldLNY on your social media for more event photos!

Do you recognize this man? This is Martin Yan, a Hong Kong-American chef and food writer, and has hosted award-winning PBS-TV cooking show Yan Can Cook since 1982. He’s also one of the owners of M.Y. China located Under The Dome in Westfield’s SF Centre. It’s so yummy there!

My sweetie pie, Hayden!

Gorgeous young ladies! I hope my daughters will one day perform in front of crowds with confidence too!

My other sweetie pie, Hadley!

Woot! We got free tix to the Asian Art Museum!! I’ve been thinking about taking my girls to more art museums so this came in at the perfect timing!

Um, hello, HOT PINK lions!! LOVE!!!

Of course, my inner social media addict had to share that asap! :) Don’t forget to check out #WestfieldLNY and their Facebook page for more photos!

Sending all my best wishes and good fortunes from my iPhone to yours! :)

I hope your Lunar New Year celebration has been going swell! I can’t emphasize how much this holiday means to me and I’m so happy that my girls are so into it now! There’s still a few days left of Lunar New Year. Will you be doing more celebration and showing your kids what Lunar New Year is all about? I’d love to hear how you help your kids learn about their culture!

HAPPY, HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!!!
