Selfish Sewing Time

The kids (in particular the little girls) are the ones that benefit from my sewing most of the time. But this past week, thanks to Selfish Sewing Week, it was all about me.

mods: shortened the sleeves of the top & changed the pocket openings on the shorts, added an inch to the length, and narrowed the leg opening slightly

The pattern has long sleeves and then a button/tab so that you can roll up the sleeves to approximately elbow length. Since it's finally warmed up here, I knew I'd wear the top with the sleeves rolled up all the time. Why not go ahead and cut the sleeves shorter? So, I did! I also opted to do the shorter front opening.

I really like my Maritime Shorts that I made back in the fall but thanks to all that running they are getting a little loose. This time around I sewed up a size 8 and only added an inch to the length.

I prefer angled pockets to scoop pockets so I decided to change the shape of the pocket opening. Next time, I will make the top of the pocket opening about an inch closer to the side seam.

I can't say enough good things about the twill fabric. I've had a really hard time finding twill that is good quality and not exorbitantly priced. This twill is comparable to the fabric used in high end RTW chinos and priced at $11.90/yard. The 7 oz. weight is perfect for shorts. It's sturdy enough but not so heavy that it's unbearable to wear during the height of summer. Organic Cotton Plus has a nice selection too...23 different colors! I have my eye on cloud and charcoal. They'll be great for making basic shorts that go with everything. Though after seeing the toddler jacket that Kelli made using chili pepper red, I'm tempted to use a fun color.;)

I forgot to move the pockets in closer to the center back seam like I did on my first pair. I don't need my bottom to look any wider than it already is! All in all, I like my new clothes and see them getting a lot of wear.
