The long-wear lipstick test!
Long wear lipstick has come a LONG way. I have to give it a little credit. The first time I tried any long wear shade, my lips felt and looked so dry. I figured out a system that helped, and from then on I’ve just been trying different brands in order to find the right formula!
My expectations are pretty low with long wear lipsticks, but I have tried a few that I’ve been pretty happy with! So last weekend, I chose 3 different brands with 3 different formulas, and put them to a true “day in the life” test to see which one performed the best.
I was looking for 1. longevity of color 2. comfortable wear without looking or feeling dry and 3. avoiding the line of color that can appear on the inside edge of the lip.
So, here are the brands and formulas I tested out.
L’Oreal Infallible 2-step lip color is the only 2 step lipstick of the bunch. On clean dry lips, apply the color, let dry, and then finish with the hydrating balm. This made the final look shiny.
Stila Stay All Day Matte Lipstick is a matte formula in a typical lipstick formula. Went on smooth and hydrating, but dried to a matte finish.
Jouer Long Wear Lip Creme Liquid Lipstick is a liquid, but dries matte. This is the hardest to apply, but the formula is really smooth. You just need a steady hand to get it where you want it!
So, I started the day with Jouer Long wear Lip Creme in Dulce De Leche. I was parked in the garage at home, flipped my mirror down, and put it on. A few hours later I did notice my lips felt a little bit dry, but it wasn’t very uncomfortable. Had I not been giving it a true test, I simply would have applied some lip balm over top. Then, a few hours even later, and after lunch, it really started to separate and I noticed a line on the inside of my bottom lip showing where the lipstick ended. At this point I really wanted to take it off, so I did.
Next up, I threw on Stila’s Stay All Day Matte lipstick in Jolie. This is a bit more pink than the Jouer color, and also a matte finish. The difference, though, is that this is in a stick form versus liquid. It’s a bit quicker to apply, and you can layer, or not layer, as much as you want. I love the color and look initially, but I noticed a line forming on the inside of my lips so much sooner than I would have thought! Again, a little balm on top (or even on bottom if you want to give up a bit of wear time) can really help avoid this, but I was giving each one a true test!
The next day, I tried L’Oreal Infallible 2-step lip color in Toujour Teaberry. This is a two step system, in which you apply the color first and finish with the balm. I didn’t love the shiny nature of the finish, but I also didn’t hate it. The shine wore away but my lips still felt hydrated. This one FAR outshined the two other lipsticks. By a million points. It lasted so long and looked the best for the longest amount of time. I never reapplied color, I only reapplied balm in the middle of the day. On this day, mind you, hurricane Matthew was hitting Raleigh, but that didn’t affect my lipstick one bit. The rest of my makeup was essentially gone by the end of the day from all the humidity, but my lips stayed strong. My only negative remark for this product is that it takes work to get it off. Like, real scrubbing. And it did leave a bit of stain behind but I didn’t mind that.
So that’s the story of 3 long wear lipsticks over the course of 2 days. The cheapest one won, by very far, and now I just need to find a color as close to that Stila color as I can in the L’Oreal formula!
