The Artist UnSEWn- Love & Friendship by Verna Mosquera

It has been over 3 years since I got that exciting email from Free Spirit Fabrics, asking me to recreate some Parson Gray projects for them for Quilt Market. They later invited me to be a part of their One Fabric Nation crew and I have been able to sew so many amazing things!

Today, I’m introducing you to a new line of projects from them, called The Artist UnSEWn. Not only will you see gorgeous fabrics from some of your favorite Free Spirit designers, but you’ll get to actually hear the inspiration behind the prints. My first Artist UnSEWn post is Love & Friendship from Verna Mosquera.

Verna is no newbie to quilting and fabric design, but she is a new-to-me designer. I’m not really quite sure why it has taken me this long to sew with her gorgeous fabrics, because her florals and classic prints really take me back to my early days of sewing. I was obsessed with all things shabby chic and I think I still carry a bit of that around with me today! In fact, last month I got to sew with her Peppermint Rose line, and I think I’m hooked! You can visit the Free Spirit Blog to read more about Verna’s thoughts behind the line.

I was able to make a few things with Love & Friendship, and I kept them all sweet and simple! I sewed the Izzy & Ivy Designs Addie Jo Skirt (with a front panel and hemband added) and Sweet Grace Ruffled Headband, as well as my FREE Headscarf pattern. I love how all of the prints mix and match and you get the super sweet pinks with pops of yellow, blue, and green.

I used the Sweet Grace Ruffled Headband to make an over-the-top hairpiece. I added a 4th layer under the three given in the pattern so I could use the four prints I had available, and then added a crocheted doily to the bottom, too. I love this pattern for a simple project that doesn’t take a whole lot of time and adds something special and unique to any outfit.

For the Addie Jo Skirt, I cut the front skirt into three panels. I took the total front skirt measurement and divided it in half, then added 1″ for my seam allowances. I cut one piece like this and used it for the center, then cut a second piece with the same measurements and cut it in half to make the side panels. My favorite Cluny lace is the perfect touch on the seams, too! The hemband piece is 4″ long and the same width as the skirt pieces. This adds another layer of print and is an easy peasy way to hem the skirt when you’re pressed for time.

The headscarf comes from my FREE headscarf tutorial! I really love the look with this line!

For these projects, I used the following prints from Love & Friendship:
