I Just Created an Instagram Account, No Really

Hold the phone guys. I just made an Instagram account. For myself. And I’m not even lying. (Or at least I won’t be lying by the time this post goes live.) If you’re wondering why this is a big deal, check this out. Also, I’m a long-time advocate against the selfie; retracting now would be of serious hypocrite status. As well as an advocate against spending one’s life on social media … which is one of the reasons I’ve never ventured into this territory before.

But as more and more of my friends are opting for the photo-based site rather than Facebook, the safe and familiar place with which I’ve held an account since 2006, it’s time for me, too, to follow suit. Not getting rid of Facebook; that’s crazy talk, just revoking the previous Instagram ban.

It feels like the right thing to do.

And don’t worry, I’ll create an entirely different blog about navigating through the foreign process. How awful it feels to view so many hashtags in a single setting. And how many users I want to explain that there is a such thing as photo overdose.

The Timing

Is it weird that I work (a certain percentage of my time) in social media and am just finally getting on board with this mogul? Probably. But the thing about me is that I generally do what I want in work/life. And much like Mary Poppins, I don’t feel the need to explain myself about it.

Goals for My Account

Figure it Out – Before I’m able to actually use the site, I need to learn how it works. Like actually learn.

Not Fall Off the Face of the Earth – Once I get on board, it’s best to do it full-speed. That doesn’t have to mean multiple posts per day, but it also means not skipping weeks on end.

Blast the Basic – No Starbucks or dogs wearing vests posts for this girl. Instead I’m opting for original or at least non-repetitive pics.

Doing What is Right – Again, too many hashtags. I will remain strong and limit my hashtag use. I will, I will.

Not Hate It – Since I held off for so long, let’s hope I actually enjoy this site. Then again, let’s hope I don’t love it either – think of all the time I could have been enjoying it instead.

That’s pretty much it. No fireworks, no long list of expectations, just jumping on this growing bandwagon. Like so many before me have done.

Now lead me to the nearest bridge, I’ll probably need to follow all my friends off of it.
