A Girl’s Guide To The New Volkswagen Golf

The ultimate fashion girl’s car in Auckland has always been a VW Golf. Just about every fashion editor, makeup artist and stylie magazine girl I know gets around town in one of these. I may have spent 20-years working in fashion magazines but I never actually gave into the temptation of buying one myself.

But when the team at Giltrap Newmarket offered to loan me the new top-of-the-line Volkswagen Golf to zip around town in for a month I did what any self respecting fashion girl would do . . . I said yes.

To set the record straight I’m not a car girl. What I mean by that is I don’t go around spotting makes and models of cars and I’m usually pretty happy if my car is clean and tidy and gets me from A to B. But I did find myself pretty excited when I first spied my shiny new wheels in the showroom.

If I had my way I would have jumped in to the driver’s seat, put my foot down and sped off. But of course I needed to get a run-down on some of the car’s bells and whistles (there are a lot). The only problem is I’m not very good at speaking car. Speak to me about fashion trends, hem-lines and cutting edge beauty products and I’m with you all the way but start talking fuel injection, turning circles, cylinders and torque and I’m lost.

That’s why I wanted to give you the girl’s guide to the new Volkswagen Golf. There’s not going to be any of the regular stuff you’d expect in a car review. In fact, I’m guessing most of you have never read a car review because if you’re anything like me you buy cars on what they look like more than what’s under the hood. As it turns out this particular car does have a lot to offer under the bonnet. And given that it’s a Volkswagen you’d be right in assuming it’s got plenty of grunt and all the safety features imaginable. So in this guide I’m going to focus on the stuff that matters to us girls.

Like the way this car reminds me to grab my cellphone every time I turn it off. I don’t know how many times I’ve been caught short rummaging through my handbag for my phone only to realise I’ve left it charging on the front passenger seat of my car – grrrrr!

Above: I love this little reminder.

And the way this car automatically syncs to my phone every time I get in making it super easy to play all of my music at the touch of a button. Oh and when you get back in the car it remembers what track you were listening to and takes up right where you left off – cool huh? Not to mention the fact that the car is climate controlled so you can enjoy the same temperature while you’re driving all year round. Oh and there’s the fact that the hand break doesn’t actually require a hand at all – it’s automatic. So when you stop at the lights on a hill it will automatically go on – no more slowing rolling back or embarrassing jerky hill starts. In fact, it activates whenever you place the car in park too so you never need to worry about forgetting to put the hand break on ever again.

Above: Automatically syncing to my phone’s playlist is a dream.

Above: Time to phone a friend.

And when it comes to making calls on the move it’s all done from an easy to navigate touch screen on the dash. The fact that your calls also automatically sync means it’s super-easy to take a call while you’re driving, return a missed call or listen to your messages.

I’m starting to understand why the fashion girls have been swooning over this car for so long now. It’s got everything a girl on the move needs and it helps that it looks pretty hot too. And just when I thought it would be too flash for me (which is code for too expensive) it turns out it costs the same as what I paid for my stock standard Honda – eek!

Anyway, I’ve got this little pocket rocket for another few weeks so I’ll report back next week on how I’m traveling.
