Owner Rachel Warren took over the reins in March this year and has some exciting plans for this already popular brand. If you’re new to The Mint Republic then it’s the name behind some of New Zealand’s most popular jewellery designers namely Boh Runga, Lindi Kingi and uber blogger Gala Darling. I recently met up with Rachel to find out how she got into jewellery and what we have to look forward to at The Mint Republic. Don’t forget to scroll down to the bottom of the page to enter to win.

Why did you take over The Mint Republic? For three and a half years, I managed the jewellery business within NZ Mint (the former owners) and it became clear late last year that in order for the business to grow to its fullest potential it needed to become a standalone business. So after some time suggesting to the owner of New Zealand Mint to sell the jewellery business he finally gave in to my badgering and here we are as The Mint Republic.
Can you tell us a little bit about you please? I’ve recently turned 34. My husband is an electrician with his own business also and we have a beautiful American bulldog called Lulu, we walk our dog every morning together to our local coffee lady in Penrose, which gives us plenty of time to talk about all that we have going on in our businesses and lives. I absolutely love this morning routine. It’s a bit of a calm, digital free time.
How did you get into jewellery? My previous career as a makeup artist and a product manager enabled me to use my creative streak on a daily basis, but I was desperate to learn more about business, I started looking for something beauty related that would extend my skills, oddly the Jewellery Manager position at NZ Mint was advertised under a beauty category on seek – the rest is history!
What’s your favourite piece of TMR jewellery? Oh Please don’t make me choose! I have to say it kind of depends on my mood and what I’m wearing. I’m loving the new Boh Runga gold and rose gold rings and I absolutely cannot go past a pair of Lindi’s long thread earrings – I especially love the Black Rhodium ones as they go with everything and are really unique. Gala Darling’s newest Mini Charm pendants all have a delightful meaning – as a new business owner I’m wearing the prosperity necklace daily as a reminder that you get out what you put in!
What’s the most popular piece of jewellery from The Mint Republic? As Boh has been designing for us the longest she has a fair chunk of our top ten pieces with her name next to them.
Do you travel much for your job? I do get around New Zealand a bit – I would so love to be on the road more as I get energised by meeting with our stockists and hearing them tell us what we are doing that’s working well and what our customers want. I love that I have seen parts of New Zealand that I probably wouldn’t have got to otherwise, and absolutely love a couple of days work in Queenstown.
What’s next for The Mint Republic? Lots of gorgeous new collections from our babe’n designers!
Can you tell us something we don’t know about you? I’m a big Warriors fan. I love the Sunday games the best . . . roast cooking, red wine and hopefully a win.
